Well, the Giants don't have enough players to play 1st base and Smoak is just a versatile defender and he is quite the hitter.
Well...

We certainly don’t have anyone atm...

Well, obviously they think Smoak has more left than Panda. This is another incremental upgrade.

You disagree that it's an upgrade and you may be right, but I trust FZ. I take your post to mean that you don't understand it...when it's pretty understandable.

I disagree its an upgrade. Compare the 2020 slash lines between the two (age in parenthesis):
Sandoval (32) - .220/.278/.268
Smoak (33) - .186/.262/.381
And look at how they did in 2019:
Sandoval - .268/.313/.507
Smoak - .208/.342/.406

Smoak showed more pop this year but is a year older and has less versatility defensively. I don't disagree that Sandoval's departure was needed. I disagree with who replaces him and that it is an incremental upgrade.

Still one more 28-man move needed since Smyly is getting activated today.

I forgot about that. I assume one of the relievers gets optioned (Garcia, Coonrod are two that come to mind) but maybe we get a surprise roster move.

Are there any other non-roster players on the 60 that I am missing?

Ok, let's say that you end up being right and Smoak never helps. Other than opportunity cost for a 25th man on the roster, what has been lost?

And again, what the FO knows about Panda and Smoak >>>>> what we know.

Chris Shaw. I know that he isn't high on the FO's list (but for some reason they aren't willing to just dfa him) but I'd like to see him on the team. To me, Smoak has shown, through the past three seasons, to be in regression and not just from a small sample size either. I want Shaw to get one last look before they make a final decision on him.

Dickerson placed on paternity and Suarez optioned.
Peralta and Robertson both recalled.
