one safety we could live without is Matt Johnson. 2 seasons and we have yet to get 1 regular season game out of him. time to move on & bring in someone like Dion Bailey

Seems like the worst time to move on. I'm not saying he will or won't be a player, but what do we have to lose by waiting 5 months?

You have no link because there is none.

This is from a blog.

"So what’s next for the soon-to-be 32-year-old? Well,*according to Around The League and Ian Rapoport, it’s possible Manning could sign with the Dallas Cowboys.Great minds… RT*@NFL_ATL: Texans release vet safety Danieal Manning. Might he stay in Lone Star State with Cowboys? It should be noted that the idea of Manning playing for the Cowboys is merely educated speculation given their need and Manning’s potential desire to remain in Texas."

Now I have the same question east asked. Can he play FS?

I see he played for the Bears from 06-10, not sure if that was during Marinielle tenure

I did see some kind of rumor that we may be interested in Nick Fairley

Manning probably needs to be toughened up a bit after playing for Wade. He would obviously be an upgrade over Heath

we've had him for 2 seasons and he's only been able to participate in 2 pre-season games and no regular season games, why would you want to give him more time? he's occupying space, drawing pay and returning nothing

This is not from a blog This is from the Houston Texans affiliate Radio Station here in Houston Sports radio 610. This info may be on a Blog, but that's not how I got it. John McClain who writes for the Houston Chronicle has also put his input in on the matter. Just informing you guys on the talk around Houston.:suds:

He would be an upgrade over anything we currently have on our roster and like Manster noted he's 32 yrs of age and has had major injuries 2 yrs in a row. Up grade Yes does he remove the need for us to hit on a S No? Nice Veteran leader on the cheap though.

Well as far as I can tell it's nothing more than local sports radio and bloggers talking about where he may/could end up. Not saying anyone is right or wrong but it just sounds like speculation at the moment.

If he can play FS sure he's an upgrade. Not sure if he's better than Church at SS.

Cowboys ready to roll with young safeties

IRVING, Texas -- When in doubt, connect a free agent to the Dallas Cowboys.

That’s what happened Monday when the Houston Texans released safety Danieal Manning. He plays a position of need for the Cowboys. He has experience. He played for Rod Marinelli in Chicago, albeit only for one year. He checks all of the boxes.

Except for the fact the Cowboys appear willing to be ready to go with their young safeties next to Barry Church, with J.J. Wilcox, last year’s third-round pick, Matt Johnson, a fourth-rounder in 2012 who has yet to play in a game, and Jeff Heath, an undrafted free agent who was forced to play a ton in 2013.

In the Cowboys' system, Church is listed as the free safety. He will line up in the box as the extra run defender. He will move around more. The other safety has to have more centerfield skills. Manning has 11 interceptions for his career.

There is also the fact he turns 32 in August.

The Cowboys went the veteran route in Will Allen last year and they didn’t get what they had wanted. (Or they cut him too soon because after his release the safety play suffered when Wilcox got hurt). As I mentioned in Monday’s blog on re-setting free agency, there is a downside to most of the players available and age is at the top of the list.

The Cowboys believe they will be better served to go with youth, and if need be they can add a safety in the summer if needed.

Or we could draft a safety worth a damn. I think we cut him thinking Wilcox will develop, but, he got hurt and that hurt his progress.

Why keep going for 30+ FA safety? How does that help our team?[/QUOTE]

How does it help our team??? Did you watch what we had at safety last year???? That's how it helps our team.

And we may have cut him THINKING Wilcox would develop, but how did that work out? That was as dumb as going into this season THINKING Wilcox will develop would be. I'm all for letting young kids win a job, but if you don't protect yourself if they don't step up, you deserve the repurcussions. How could you possibly bank on a kid with as few snaps in his life at safety and such little time in the NFL without at least protecting yourself in case he doesn't step up. He may become a 10 year starter, or he may be cut in a year or two and never heard from again. We just don't know yet.

Signing 30+ year old safeties are hurting the team more than not, just for the simple fact we aren't fixing the situation. This is why we're in the situation we are in. I think it was Parcells who didn't think safety was an important enough position to upgrade and Jerry has carried that line of thinking over with these old ass washed up vets and these late round guys.

Count me as one of the guys who want a 1st or 2nd round safety.

He was better as a returner during his career. Doubt he would be an upgrade over Wilcox.

While I'm not ready to throw Wilcox out with the bathwater he hasn't shown he'd be too hard to beat out. I hope he improves enough to make Safety a non issue but if he's the same guy we had in 13 he's a liability.

I'm not saying I wouldn't the guy just sharing what I heard, but I would have to disagree with you on one thing....What has Wilcox shown you for you to say he's better than Manning? Don't see it my self. The only thing he has over Manning is youth. Manning is not a special player maybe just a little better than avg. If Wilcox's ceiling even approaches Mannings then I'd be a happy camper. I'm not close to being sold on Wilcox.

Wilcox was an incomplete to me. Tough year with the injury and his mom passing away.
I'm not ready to say he's anything at this point but he flashed enough football player for me where I'm excited to see year two....even with that, safety in the first or second round would be nice.
