So you don't think Alex is a big reason we won 13 games? We have always had a good defense. This good? No, but a good defense. Alex plays his best football up to date and we win 13 games. He might not put the numbers up, but he doesn't turn the ball over and he leads this offense. Like I have stated before, I want Alex to win but stafford could as well. You might want to throw away previous years of thought, but will the voters?

As for what he over came last year? How about being benched for David Carr? Does that count?

If we had Stafford, would we have been a playoff team? What would Detroit have done with Smith at QB?

And are 49er fans of all fans holding a great WR against his QB? Anyone who says Stafford should be "penalized" for having the privilege of throwing to Johnson forfeits the right to argue that Joe Montana and Steve Young are among the best QBs of all time. You can no longer state that Montana is the best QB of all time because he got to throw to Rice, and Young got to throw to Rice AND Owens.

The award is Stafford's. He's earned it. He missed the vast majority of last year with a serious injury and came back this year to have a better year than Alex Smith. The reasons people are giving for Stafford not to get it are crazy.

You do know that Stafford does not play for the 49ers, right? I mean, that right there eliminates him from contention. ;)

montana won a super bowl without rice and young made stokes look like a starter.

stafford has one season where he's chucked the ball downfield at some talented guys in johnson and pettigrew. if stafford and smith switched spots, half of stafford long throws would be either dropped or called back by some dumb penalty. calvin johnson would add 10 rating to put smith over 100 by snagging in all of smith's overthrown deep balls.

Stafford undeniably put up the better numbers than Alex. But in my opinion Alex has made the more impressive comeback. Stafford wasn't left for dead like Alex. Nobody gave up on Stafford like people did with Alex. Stafford was never labeled a bust like Alex. People knew the type of numbers Stafford could put up if he had a full season under his belt. But NO ONE saw this coming. If I told you last summer that Stafford would throw 40 TDs and lead the Lions back to the playoffs it wouldn't sound that far fetched. But if I said Alex Smith will QB a 13-3 Niners team to a first round bye in the playoffs it would be very hard to believe. If this was for MVP Stafford wins by a landslide, but I think Smith has made the greater comeback.

Then the fans missed big time by not voting Victor Cruz as a nominee. I'm sure a lot of them have the false impression that a player had to be an established player at one point to win this award, but he doesn't.

There is in fact no criteria at all which is kinda weird IMO.

Maybe you need to read the article.

This is also an NFLPA award. Do better research.

Further mucking up the value of the award is that there are multiple Comeback Player of the Year Awards?

Yeah. That's it. The only difference between Alex Smith and Matt Stafford is the WRs around them.

What does that even mean? It's not like we picked Alex off the streets. It's not like he's been a FA for an extended period of time. As soon as Jim was hired he made it public that he wants Alex back. He didn't even hit FA. I'm not sure how Alex was "left for dead".

And it's not like Alex came back and set the world ablaze. He's leading the 29th passing offense and is 24th in passing TDs. He's actually averaging less TDs per game and less yards per game than he did last year. His QB rating is up by only 8.6 points. What a comeback.

Meanwhile, Stafford is coming off a huge shoulder injury and missing the majority of last season, and has become the 4th QB ever to throw for 5000+ yards and 40+ TDs. And again, he's the 4th QB EVER to do that. He did have Megatron though, so I'm sure you're ready to discount those stats. Forget the fact that he plays behind a worse OL than Smith, forget the fact that he doesn't have the benefit of the play-action that Smith has, forget the fact that he has doesn't have a defense that puts their QB consistently in a position to win. Alex Smith clearly has made a much bigger comeback, even though he's averaging less yards and TDs per game than he did LAST year.

Stafford would switch places with Smith in a heartbeat.

stafford has always been physically amazing, but i don't think he would do very much on this team. he's still improving, but i never seen him as a qb that could lead a team when he was at georgia.

Harbaugh was the only one who backed Smith. The media, fans, and pretty much everyone else wanted nothing to do with him. The odds were stacked much higher against A. Smith than they were with Stafford. Stafford never went through the psychological distress that Alex has been through over the last half decade. Stafford was never labeled a failure or a bust. Alex has, and he's brought himself back and has done a hell of a job. You can ignore the psychological part of this, but that is why Alex has made the better comeback, IMO.

There are valid arguements for both players. They are both very deserving of it. Lets leave it at that.

Pennington was coming off a season in which he tore is rotator cuff. The following season he had a career year in terms of stats. Alex Smith isn't coming off a major injury, and is actually posting lesser stats than he did last season on a per game basis.

Lol, please. A lot of people on the ESPN boards wanted Alex back on a one year contract. People were talking about him as one of the more attractive FA QBs. And I really don't think the media cared enough about the 49ers and Alex Smith to pronounce him "dead". And will we please stop talking about what happened to Alex the last 7 years? That doesn't matter when giving this award out.

If you took a second and took your head out of Smith's ass you'd realize that no one not a 49ers fan will agree with you.

I'm only making my case for A. Smith. It's my opinion. I don't care who agrees with me.

No one has made a single legitimate argument as to why Smith should win the award over Stafford. Until then, I'm plenty happy up Stafford's ass.
