The 6 million originally came from Adolph Eichmann who was the Nazi's administrator of the Holocaust. The Nazis also kept detailed records which were used to come up with those figures. Several different people came up with similar estimates from 5 to 6 million people. Work camps were only one source of killings. There were also extermination camps all over Europe and approximately 2 million alone were killed in the east by mass shootings.
