Most Detroit sports fans recall Darko Milicic's days with the Pistons. He was known as "The Human Victory Cigar". Especially when the Pistons were still a championship contender from 2005 -2008. Darko would only come into the game when the Pistons had a huge lead late in the fourth quarter.

Now we fast forward to 2013. When there is a game like today's against the Angels, and it is tied in the top of the tenth at home. That is when Jim Leyland brings Phil Coke into the game.

And, in effect, raises the white flag.

We surrender.

I liked "The Human Victory Cigar" a lot more.

How about for the rest of the season you only bring Coke in when it is, say 9-1 Tigers in the 8th inning?

STOP raising the white flag and give us more Victory Cigars!

One thing is for sure...no player can leave the Tigers (due to poor performance) and say Jim Leyland did not give them any chance to right themselves. JL is a players manager...he will go the extra mile to give everyone the extra chance. Of course that leaves him open to criticism from the fans....especially the lazy ones who find it easier to just blame the manager for anything.

Relief is coming, Tigers management are just dragging feet. They know they don't have much time to make a move. Pen relief and closer relief is coming.

Porcello will probably be used for that, maybe Nicky C.....Maybe Alvarez........But if they give up Smyly time to dethrown DD.

Who honestly thought Darko back in the day was going to be good? :L We gave it a pass because we were winning at that time. I never took that draft pick seriously.

White guy from eastern europe as young as he was. Big men still ruling the paint. No one took that seriously other then the Detroit Free Press and the people that read it.

My point exactly Muzzer...Coke is an older washed up version of Darko. Use him the same way!

Yeah, Reed gets sent down for Rondon to return...Coke stays though. I don't care if they brought Danny Worth, Bull Durham Jr., or or a reliever up. But Coke needs to get cut or go on the DL (get sent down humanely like Avila). There isn't a thing besides loyalty keeping him around Detroit.

Coke to back of pen for mop-up. Problem is that Downs is no more trustworthy....so DD will also have to seek a lefty reliever.

Tiger needs/DD shopping list:

1. Lefty relief pitcher
2. Closer (? or gamble on Benoit/Rondon)
3. Regardless of #2....another relief pitcher
4. A bat to replace VMart
5. A SS of the future (maybe the NEAR future, if Peralta does hard time)
6. Xanax prescription for burf

I believe when Coke started running in from the pen during the mini brawl it is probably the first time he did so without giving up a run.

But seriously with Coke having a whip of almost 1.6 and era approaching 7.he has to go. Rondon since coming back has looked good in the seventh. benoit and Smyly have been terrific. So I wouldn't expect a big trade. Why Evan Reed is on the team over jose ortega is beyond me. Downs when he comes back should be the lefty specialist and putkonen the long guy.
