Kubiak interviews for Lions' HC vacancy | CSN Houston

Texans former head coach Gary Kubiak is up for a new job.

Tim Twentyman, from the Lions' official website, confirmed via Twitter, that Kubiak interviewed for the Lions' head coaching opening on Tuesday. Detroit's Fox2 first reported the interview.

The Bucs also reportedly had interest in Kubiak before they hired Lovie Smith. The Lions are looking for a new head coach after firing Jim Schwartz.

Kubiak was fired with three games remaining in the 2013 season, when the Texans had a 2-11 record. The Texans finished the season at 2-14. The Texans hired Bill O'Brien last week.

Kubiak had a 61-64 record in his near-eight-year career coaching the Texans.

As an OC he would be OK. I don't think as a HC makes sense, but the competition is not that great either.

Whiz or bust

maybe as a OC. Not as HC

That might be a solid consensus. Go back to being an OC for a while and then try the HC job again later.

He might be more successful as an HC a few years from now if he goes back to an OC job for a while.

I'm not particularly interested in any of the guys being mentioned, including Whiz.

Do you view him as someone you're excited to have become the coach? I don't. Yes, he is the best of those who appear to be on the list but are we settling?

At least give me a confirmation from Dungy or our front office that we threw everything at our disposal to try and get him back on the sidelines. If the guy publicly said it would be the.Lions job he would want then offer it to him off the record. If he says no that's ok, but make sure his answer is actually no. That stuff doesn't stay quiet for long. If the Lions had made a legit inquiry about him we would know.

I think Kubiak with a real QB would have been very successful in Houston.

Whiz #1

Kubiak or Zimmer as the second choice. Unless Dungy was really in Detroit trying to break the bank! The he is #1.

And no way no how on Caldwell.

I'd take Kubiak as nothing more then a QB coach, anything more then that........Same Ole Lions reaching for something that isn't there....

Biggest Fish out there is Wiz........Maybe next week the Seahawks lose and Pete Carrols ego is so big he leaves Seattle after rebuilding that shit hole of a football program for the past 40 plus years in less then 3 years......

There's no one out there with credentials until this weeks game.......I'll take Wiz.....No need to rush anything.....The best teams are still playing, most likely because they have the best coaches that we can't interview yet.

Didn't the Seahawks play in a Super Bowl just a few years back? Maybe it was 40 years ago.... Im forgetful. Seems like Whisenhunt was coaching against em, but hes coached in so many Super Bowls, its hard to keep it all straight. I'd be happy with Kubiak at OC,.... obviously.

Dungy came out publically and said he wasn't interested in coming back. I know Gruden did too. Not sure about Cowher. But Dungy and Gruden both said no not specifically to the Lions but in general.

I would rather my excitement come from the coordinaters and not the HC. I like the HC to be cold and calculating. Maybe it is from watching Bellichek all these years.

I think there is a very big difference in a guy simply saying on a very broad scope that he doesnt plan to return to the sidelines than there is him talking privately with Millenhew. If after hearing what he has to say about the job and what we might offer Dungy then says no thanks then I am fine with that.

What I was saying is that the rumor mill on those type of conversations doesnt miss them very often. So until I hear that being reported I am operating under the belief that we havent had that conversation. I think we should.

When a guy offers an opinion specifically saying that the Lions job is the one he would want I would read something into that. A broad based opinion saying the Lions job is the most attractive sounds different to me than one where he says thats the job he would want. So ask the guy if he wants it is all I'm saying.

After reading the article on Mlive pertaining to Stafford and his being involved in any way whatsoever with these interviews the less I like it. In fact, I think it is absolutely ridiculous.

He was part of the problem last year, a big part, and based on his comments that its not his thing about working with a QB guru he apparently doesnt realize that.

Perhaps the better course of action might be to remind him that he is being paid a shit ton of money to be amongst the very best QB's in the league, not an interception machine with questionable mechanics, terrible decision making, and bizarre accuracy problems.

Maybe its not the best course of action to seek the input of a guy whose thinking might be along the lines of putting his considerable weight (by that I mean what the number reads on the scale when chubs steps on it, not his influence) behind the guy he feels wont try to fix him (since he doesnt need it).

I would be more inclined to tell Matty that he'll work with whoever the fuck the organization picks and feels can correct his very flawed game and that he'll put a big smile on his fat face and do whatever it takes to get better.

If he plays next year anything at all like he did this year he'll be as hated as Joey Harrington was. He will be running out of the tunnel to a chorus of boo's and it wont just be Smitty doing it. No one will be referring to him as a "pimp" unless he actually starts up a business on 8 Mile.

I should be less surprised by the TMZ like backlash at Stafford lately. Now Phil Sims is pissed off because Matt wears his hat backwards lol wtf happened to men?

Kid is the face of the franchise. Potential HC candidates are coming in with gobs of film of his every throw. And people are upset that he's being brought into these interviews to speak with potential new leaders?

The lies, the drama, the media BS is enough to choke a pitt bull to death. Stafford is not making the decison here. Why is everyone freaking out?

Freaking out keeps us from doing something really bad, like insulting fat tuba players.

If Stafford wasn't sitting in on these interviews, his haters would be still be freaking out, calling him lazy and uninterested in the new HC search. Dude is in a serious no win situation right now with the media and the fans.

Guy had a bad season or more accurately two bad seasons. He needs to deal with it. The Lions are to invested in him to just move on but he still needs to answer the questions regarding his play. Stafford should have answered the QB coach differently but it's still managements responsibility to find him the help.

Like it or not Stafford is the face of the franchise and when they underperform he is going to have to deal with shouldering more blame than he should. I can't fault him for being the face of the franchise but the clock is ticking on him and I hope whoever is the QB coach can get his game back to two seasons ago.

He put himself there, its entirely on his shoulders. Was there a worse QB in the league the last 6 games or so?

My real problem with him came after the season when he didn't want to work with a QB specialist. If you play that poorly and then tell the fans that you arent interested in looking at ways to improve thats not going to sit well with them.

What is his offseason plan to improve? Nobody is asking him questions about his personal life, but football questions about how he intends to improve go with the territory. At this point what I've gotten from him is that there isnt anything wrong with his game (at least in his opinion). That is completely unacceptable.

I don't see where there is value to be found in seeking even one iota of his input on the new HC. If he doesnt think working with a QB guru will help him then why would he want to have a coach who was pointing out his flaws in an interview for the job opening? Based on what he himself has actually said it would seem completely logical that he would least want the guy who might very well be the one most likely to make him better. A new coach wont matter if we get the same Stafford in 2014.

My real problem with him came after the season when he didn't want to work with a QB specialist.

Another topic I feel is and was blown totally out of proportion and circles back to my comment about him being in a no win situation. This comment makes it sound like the Lions tried to pair him up with a QB specialist and he refused.

What really happened is the media turned this kid into a national punching bag overnight, then had the gall to offer him advice on how he can fix the problems they (the media) decided to reign down on him. All he said at the time is exactly what his HC and OC had been telling him every time his "mechanics" came up in the media. I can't believe people are holding this "Fuck off" answer to a fuck off media question against him.
