I hate that slide and I really don't like that kind of baseball. But to suspend Utley is stupid. That play has happened multiple times this year and no one else has been suspended. Now you're going to suddenly enforce it in the playoffs? That's some bullshit.

I think they should change the rules. I don't think they should allow that to happen in the future. But it's unfair to suddenly suspend a guy just because old man Torre was at the game and he made a hasty and emotional decision to do something about it.
Good point and if Tejada hadn't broken his leg, Utley would not be suspended!

LOL, is "anyone" commenting" on Holiday, when he doesn't even play for the Mets or Dodgers?

See this is how online forums work. Someone posts something, someone says something back in regards to that post. The video was that of Matt HOLLIDAY comparing the Utley slide. The end result was ME commenting that there was a difference in the videos.

Somewhere along the line you missed all of that and the end result was the wheels came off.

You seem like a reasonable human being. I don't disagree that the suspension is likely because of the combination of the 'slide' and the injury but do you think the play was initially called correctly by the umps?

Official Baseball Rule 5.09 (a) (13)

"(A batter is out when) A preceding runner shall, in the umpire’s judgment, intentionally interfere with a fielder who is attempting to catch a thrown ball or to throw a ball in an attempt to complete any play."

How can a ball player slide "too late"? If Utley was in the base path when he slide, then IMO, it's a legal slide.

If you're in the base path between 2nd and 3rd already it kinda voids that.

This is the rule that should have been enforced. Inning should have been over.

I could argue that it should not be considered a neighborhood play IF Tejeda still had the ball in his glove. It was in his throwing hand though. He was one step away from throwing it to first. Terrible judgement by the ump.

<licks wounds.....on to game 3>

At least we agree on something.
Obviously there's homerism at play. That's natural. But c'mon, this is Chase Utley. He's a second baseman. He's been the victim of bullshit slides like this throughout his career. He knows whats up and he is accepting the fact that he could get tackled into oblivion if the Dodgers start him against Harvey tonight. He's playing old-school, tough guy baseball. I don't like that kind of a game with beanballs and other stupid things like that, but that's just him. He's an old dude who's been living that kind of game for decades.

Now, at this moment, to suspend him is stupid. What about when Odor impaled Giovatella in the shin? That was two rivals in a hunt for the playoffs. Or how about when Altuve just about got his foot broken off?

None of those incidents resulted in disciplinary action. That's what gets me.

The facts of the matter are that Utley was guilty and MLB is being reactionary and hypocritical to suddenly decide to suspend him because it's the playoffs, Torre was at the game, and Tejada has a broken leg.

The whole thing sucks. He wouldn't have slid into him like that if the rules had been getting enforced earlier or if they had been passing out memos around MLB saying "don't pull this shit or we're going to suspend you."

I agree Utley should have been ruled out on the play, but to suspend him is wrong.

If this was the first time Utley had done this it might be different, but it isn't. He has done this multiple times.

He was basically past 2nd when he slid. Way to late to be legal
You might want to look at the video again. Utley started his slide on the right field side of second base.

See this is how online forums work. Someone posts something, someone says something back in regards to that post. The video was that of Matt HOLLIDAY comparing the Utley slide. The end result was ME commenting that there was a difference in the videos.

Exactly. None of those had been suspensions. None had warnings. He's doing what he's always done, what he's been taught to do, and what's been fine for years.

Nope, not today. Today you're suspended.

That was the greatest argument of all time. "Yeah I saw the video but if he robbed the store why didn't they charge him?".

Fucking Classic

Let MJ be the one to bring up a thread that has "nothing" to do with the current thread. Dude, if you have nothing to say about this thread, then why are you even on it.
