...and they lost three of their last four. Granted, Miss State was good that year with Dak.

Ranking teams that early is equivalent to Ready, Fire, Aim.
Like I said, the Division and the schedule was a bitch in that particular year. EVERYBODY in the West but Arkansas was good that year, and they traded turns beating each other. Bully had a few good meals (LSU, A&M and Auburn) and lost to Alabama and Ole Miss before losing their Bowl Game. They beat a lot of good teams to get to 9-0 and #1 before getting worn out - I suppose. At the end of the day, they were not as good and deep as Alabama, but they were still plenty good.

I wasn't being overly generous, just trying to be objective. It may have been more of an indictment of those they were matched up against. Some of those conferences 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams were just so so IMO. Not bad by any means, just not reall good either.

I'm not as sold on Georgia and Florida as many others are right now. It may be just my opinion but they are still behind the three SEC West biggies. Closing the gap a little but still....

Even though I listed Georgia as 2nd in the SEC, I think Bama is their 2nd best team.

I am trying to err on the non homer side as well. I would rather be over critical than overly optimistic. We both agree that the SEC's top five would fair better than average.

As for USC vs. SEC teams...
TELL THE WHOLE STORY
2002 Auburn(9-4) 24-17 USC vs Oregon(7-6) 44-33
2003 @Auburn(8-5) 23-0 vs Oregon(8-5) did not play
2005 vs. Arkansas(2-6) 70-17 vs Oregon(10-2) 45-13
2006 @Arkansas(10-4) 50-14 vs Oregon(7-6) 35-10

So the only year Oregon fared better that a random SEC team versus USC was a year that you did not have the guts to play them while in the same conference. I don't blame you for being proud of that, it is all you have.

Why are you bringing up Oregon into a conversation about USC vs Auburn?

Utah was 12-0 in 2004.

I went with BYU in the search. Utah was ranked 4th and 5th in the final polls compared to our 2nd. It must be sad when you must hang your hat on a 4th ranked Mountain West team but I wish you well with that nutsack swinging.

How did that work out for you? Are you the 59:59 co champs of 2010? In all fairness, that is your best claim of greatness.

Someone claimed that it would have been a better game with a different opponent. It was a very competitive game.

How dumb you must be to search BYU instead of Utah...

Why are you bringing USC into a conservation about Oregon's greatest teams versus Auburns?

You were the one that brought up Oregon...I was speaking about USC being the most dominant team of the 2000s.

Don’t argue with that guy, his teams’ mama called their boy home and he sucks. Dabo is a family man with two sons on the team and soon to be another. That combined with the legacy he has built at Clemson means more to him than anything else.

LOL

"Yeah, well your team sucks" is the lamest answer on sports message boards.

What are you 12 years old?

BTW.....Bo Pelini even beat Dabo.

I covered this in another thread, but every decade in college football has been cyclical, and it's been this way for a long time.

There was a time in the 2000s that I thought we'd never see a top 5 ranking any year without Texas and USC.

When we entered 2010, I never would've thought Florida wouldn't win another NC, let alone not even win the SEC. Florida State was recruiting out of their mind and seemed built for another 10+ years of dominance. And who the hell was Clemson?

There have been a few teams (Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama) who have built up brands that can stand the test of time, but otherwise things have been cyclical. Who knows? The 2020s could see Saban retire and Alabama falls off (or they grab Dabo and Clemson falls off). Oregon could actually be building something sustainable on the West Coast and find themselves in the playoffs more often than not. Wisconsin could discover that great QB plays wins titles and they could win one.

I guarantee you will see teams rise and fall, though, as it's happened every other decade of basically all of our lives.

Which post was delusions of grandeur? No one has said Oregon is a title contender.
I can see Oregon in the CFP next year...if they avoid a bed shitting like they had in Tempe this year. I don't see anyone in the PAC getting a lot better and some of them even taking a step back. Don't think a loss to the Bucknuts will make any difference if they run the table otherwise.

But, what the hell do I know. These are 18-22 year old kids...that frequently have brains that turn to shit for some periods of time.

Nobody else can keep up. Is this bad for the long term health of the game? Ohio State is the only team outside of the south that can compete right now.
There are other teams from the North that are competitive.
