Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the MLBPA has approached MLB with an offer to re-open talks about a 14-team postseason.

The players reportedly had been adamantly opposed to expanding the postseason field to that extent after already agreeing to go from 10 to 12 teams. However, it sounds like they now might be willing to consider it if MLB comes in their direction in other areas, including the Competitive Balance Tax. Olney has heard from sources on both sides of the talks that renewed discussions regarding a 14-team postseason "could be a potential breakthrough." MLB and the MLBPA are expected to meet again soon, although a date hasn't been set yet.

Why not expand to 32 teams and do a 16 teams per league playoff format? That would result in MAD TV revenue…

Actually, I am technically recommending a 32 team playoff structure.

True. You were. Missed the sarcasm. But I still stand with 16 is better than 12 of 14.

But I do actually enjoy the 10 we have currently even more than the 8 previously and 6 before that.

Going more than the current 10 completely breaks the system. You can’t give byes because it can be a total cooler, so having a single round of 1-game elim games is perfect. And you only subject that round to the losers (those that didn’t win their division). After all, the concept of a wildcard is that you are given a CHANCE. It is essentially a lottery ticket. Don’t bitch about the road you need to take if you couldn’t even win your division.

I actually think 10 is perfect

It’s just enough of an incentive to win the division, but provides enough playoff chances that more team should be trying to get there

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association are scheduled to meet Sunday for a negotiating session.

The Players Union is expected to present a counterproposal to the league when the two sides meet Sunday for the first time since a 90-minute session on Thursday in New York. While several core economic issues remain unresolved, the focus of the ongoing talks has shifted towards on-field matters of late. With the ownership-imposed lockout extending to nearly 100 days, spring training contests cancelled until at least March 18, and the upcoming 2022 regular season already delayed, a finalized collective bargaining agreement doesn't appear imminent. The clock is ticking. Stay tuned.

What does it take for the owners to approve? 30-0 vote?

Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports that Major League Baseball declared themselves "deadlocked" after receiving Sunday's proposal from the Major League Baseball Players Association.

MLB's Glen Caplin stated, "We were hoping to see some movement in our direction to give us additional flexibility and get a deal done quickly. The Players Association chose to come back to us with a proposal that was worse than Monday night and was not designed to move the process forward... On some issues, they even went backwards. Simply put, we are deadlocked. We will try to figure out how to respond, but nothing in this proposal makes it easy." Sigh. As of now, no follow-up meeting has been scheduled.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Major League Baseball is willing to increase the CBT threshold above $220 million -- provided the Major League Baseball Players Association makes moves in other areas.

Rosenthal notes that in order for the league to move closer to the Players Association's CBT figure of $238 million, they would require concessions in several other areas. Most notably, a pre-arbitration bonus pool much lower than the $80 million from the union's latest proposal, sharp penalties for teams for teams that exceed the CBT thresholds by the highest amounts and a streamlined process for implementing rules changes beyond the 2023 season. While the union agreed to grant the league the ability regarding a pitch clock, larger bases and shift restrictions for 2023, the league wants the ability to make other changes for subsequent years within 45 days of season's end. The league considers the ability to introduce those rule changes as critical to improving the on-field product. A follow-up meeting has yet to be announced, but perhaps this isn't the complete stalemate that it looked to be earlier on Sunday.

Let's knock off the expansion talk. In case MLB fans haven't noticed, there aren't enough good players for 24 teams, let alone 32.
With more teams in the post season, at what point are regular season games worthless?
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you all trying to turn the MLB into the NBA?
TV ratings, for the MLB,are pretty bad, as it is.

And there are probably 25 ownership groups who don’t want to have to pay to field competitive teams year in and out. Their response to tanking is expand the playoffs thus defeating the whole point of the players argument.

Evan Drellich and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report that MLB presented multiple CBA proposals for the MLBPA to consider on Monday.

Drellich adds that it was relayed from MLB to the MLBPA that the league views Tuesday as a deadline for an agreement if there is to be a 162-game season and players receive full pay and full service time. Commissioner Rob Manfred, of course, has already announced the canceling of the first two series of the season, but MLB evidently hasn't ruled out the possibility of making up those games in some fashion. If a deal isn't reached Tuesday, the league plans to "cancel" another week of games. Drellich also notes that while MLB has suggested a deadline for the aforementioned things, they cannot unilaterally impose them. Rather, both sides will have to negotiate it. Rosenthal was told by one player that MLB's most recent offers "tilted too far in the league’s favor," while another player said “I’m done getting my hopes up.” It doesn't sound like there's much optimism for a deal, but we'll find out more Tuesday.
