We like to revise history, thats what we do in every sport in order to diminish the greatness of any current player

This goes both ways.

Many of the older folks on here suffer from "nostalgia bias" where "nothing is as good as it was "back in the day."

However, many of the younger folks on here suffer from "recency bias" where "nothing has ever been as good as it is right now."

Both are right and both are wrong in pretty much equal measure.

Starks was a pretty good player and fit the Knicks squad well. But in 14 seasons he made one All-NBA 2nd team and one all-star team despite playing on one of the better teams.

He was a lifetime 41% shooter and 35% 3 point shooter. You aren't a starting 2 in the league today with those shooting rates.

You are not understanding the value of a really good defender. Starks played with a chip on his shoulder. I'll take a SG that can shoot it like that and guard the other teams beast PG/SG for sure.

I agree with this.

That made sense in the 90s to some degree. Although his lack of accolades suggests that even then his value was limited.

In the modern game you just can't afford that luxury. Your backcourt MUST be able to shoot from the outside.

You could certainly argue that many of the players on the list I provided would have struggled a lot in the 90s. The physicality would have affected them certainly.

But a guy like Starks just doesn't cut it in today's game when you have centers that shoot better from the arc.

No doubt about it

And the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle

My bad. I misread what you wrote.

No offense, but you tend to do that a bit with me. Which is what makes it frustrating to chat with you.

The nature of writing at work.

This happens to me all the time. When I point it out the other person usually just stops responding.
