The Mariners have emerged as a major player in the Robinson Cano sweepstakes, several sources told Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com. With the Yankees not wanting to go to seven years or as much as $200MM, an industry source with knowledge of the negotiations termed the Yankees chances of retaining Cano at "less than 50-50."

I dont doubt seattle is a candidate to get cano... But i would bet that it will be the Yankees... they really have no choice but to sign cano... they will have to raise their offer if their is competition... I actually see Cano getting 200 for 7 seasons...

I don't think the M's are signing him, could be leverage, but I don't see it

I'm happy for Robbie that someone else actually came forward and showed interest, I was starting to feel bad for him. If they do offer 8/200 the Yankees should counter with 7/175 and stay there. If he goes to Seattle for $25 million more than he's as dumb as he is lazy.

Well for his demands, can you blame the market really? He eventually will lower his demands and one club will be lucky to land him.

IMO, a team being lucky equates to the number of years they have to pay Cano. Anything at 5 years or under would be good for most if not all teams. Much longer, and history says that said team will regret the last 2-3 years of the contract.

More than likely, but he should still be productive for the first 4-5 years of the deal, that's if he gets 6-8 years.

I actually think going to Seattle would be a smart move. They have pitching galore in their farm system. The Mariners are going to get better very soon. The Yankees have a lot of players to replace & it won't be easy for them to do so.

Jay Z will be 1 and done after this public debacle in his quest to be a super agent...he might get fired before Cano even signs anything at this point.

Yeah he's a disaster - I wish guys like him would stay out of the game - he's not helping Cano's best interests

Bob Dutton @TNT_Mariners That's in case you want that actual tweet: Quick translation: #Mariners willing to offer Cano a 10-year deal for $230-240 million.

This is about done I think.

Original report is from ESPN Desportes so be prepared to use Google translate if you have to do so.

5:15pm: Cano asked the Mariners for a ten-year, $240MM deal, but the Mariners' offer did not exceed $200MM, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal [ame=""]tweets[/ame].

Good for Seattle! I thought only Detroit, New York, and the Angels signed bad long term contracts!

It's not going to be easy at all, but it may actually be a little easier if Cano goes to Seattle. If Cano stays the Yankees will have far fewer options in left field and third base and they will have a seriously rough time getting the 400 innings they want. They have Kelly Johnson as insurance at second. With the 25-30 million they will save by Cano leaving they can bring in Beltran or Choo and Omar Infante, then have money left for Tanaka and either Matt Garza or Ubaldo Jimenez.
