Overview of fixing games in the NFL...The NFL is far and away the most lucrative sports league in the world, and has comfortably displaced MLB as America's sports past time.

imo, the owners have too much to lose for there to be some type of wide spread fixed outcome of the games. One reason the owners have long been against having a team in LV was to keep teams and players as far away from gambling temptation as possible.

That said, are we to believe that EVERY game is on the up and up? In a world full of corruption, and greed, I think that would be a very naïve position to take.

Frankly even calling games to keep it close (see: atl/ne) is completely unacceptable

Rigging a competitive event doesn't require everyone involved. Or a majority. Only a handful. Or one, if it's the right one.

Nearly every sport, at every level, has been rigged at some point. Most without much of any fanfare.

Everyone has a price. And it's often disappointingly low. You are very nieve.
Agree it only takes a few, but if you don't think some in the know won't sing over time you're delusional.

or the sheep don't see.

See Tim Donaghy of the NBA.

he called out the NBA for doing it, no one cared.

He witnessed it first hand.

Every game may not be on the up and up, but I doubt it's by direction pre snap. Refs are human and sometimes screw up. Take the non call in the Saints game, I think it was in the minds of the Refs not to be part of the game, yet by not tossing the flag that's exactly what happened.

It's quite possible mid 4th qtr the head official on the field told his crew "Don't be part of the game" effectively fucking up their judgement.

Of course, I think it's safe to say, the majority of the fudging is regarding the betting line...but you've got to nail them...that's the hard part. If guys are smart, you get in, and get out and pocket your gain and keep your mouth shut.

The NBA ref that got busted...went too far...again greed.

I forget the name of the former official now working on FOX...he was interviewed earlier in the week on local sportstalk and he gave a very insightful remedy to all the missed or controversial calls...1 extra official, not a replay official per se but a guy in the booth that can replay any call and would have the authority to correct the call on the field without lots of interruption of the game flow.

What was the league's response to this?

basically just that this was a rogue guy and the nba would never do this.

and then never mentioned him or it again.

So, what caused all the refs involved in the now historically bad non-call to do it? Human error? You will never convince me, for what it’s worth, no matter what Roger Goodell says.

The idea that this 20 year run is rigged makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. So this somehow is in the best interests of the NFL and the other 31 franchises?

If anything, the opposite is true. The Pats have 31 teams either gunning for them year after year or trying to duplicate their success.

Just be happy that you are likely seeing the tail end of it.

So 32 franchises, with thousands upon thousands of various employees involved over the years that largely change like m&m's, have apparently managed to maintain a massive secret of the entire league being rigged? There have been no significant leaks from ANYONE, even in the age of the internet for the past 20+ years, let alone social media and mobile devices of the past decade? This isn't even taking into account just how much more complex and elaborate such a massive scandal would need to be beyond all of that considering the amount of Vegas gambling money surrounding the games.

Bad calls happen as a result of human error in officiating, and it's unfortunate. But there's zero logic to think that there's some wide scale fraud going on in the NFL to rig what happens. If it's all fixed, either Roger Goodell has had one hell of a time keeping the Patriots down, or it's all even more elaborate than anyone could have imagined, with him and Belichick/Brady/Kraft secretly being good buddies behind the scenes.

Time to put the tinfoil hats down and spend less time rotting in the basement, folks.

The belief that any professional sport is rigged is horrendously stupid. I laugh at the people who use the NO/LAR game as an example. If the officials were rigging the game for LAR... then why miss a blatant facemask which would have been crucial on the previous drive?

If rigging the game for LAR - why miss Donald getting held all game and the crucial no facemask call on Goff the previous drive? These are always the glaring holes in your theories...

FWIW, you can also see from that refs vantage point that it's entirely possible that he misjudged where the ball was when the contact happened. The players and ball were coming directly at him. It was a horrid call, but it's pretty easy to see that his perception of the ball being in front of the receiver or behind him was the issue.

I’m not say that they rigged it either way or that any game is. But could have been the case in the past. This non-call was total incompetence, non-professional, that is all.
