Serious question - Is there a baseline or average for catch/drop % in the NFL?

By the numbers
Cam Sims had 32 catches on 48 targets - 66% catch rate

Steven Sims 27 catches on 37 targets - 72.9% catch rate

Terry Mac 87 catches on 134 targets - 64.9% catch rate

Logan Thomas 72 catches on 110 targets - 64.9% catch rate

JD McKissic 80 catches on 110 targets - 72.7% catch rate

Antonio Gibson 36 catches on 44 targets - 81.8% catch rate

Here are some numbers on drop rate from 2015-2017, good and bad As per pff

Amari Cooper- 13.62% and Dean loves him. He was fourth worst in the league.
Def Bryant- 12.28%
Antonio Brown- 3.38%
Larry Fitz- 3.27%
Michael Thomas- 2.97%
Jordan Reed- 2.7%

Catch rate was interesting but there are too many factors. Accuracy of QB and risk taking of QB immediately come to mind. Davante Adams was 77%, but Tyreek Hill wasn’t on the list So he was below 66%.

I wonder if these drop rates factor in the following or is it simply catch, no catch.
*Down and Distance of catch/drop
*Uncontested catch/drop
*Contested catch/drop
*3rd down catch/drop
*Accuracy of throw to make said catch/drop

those arent drop rates , they are catch rates based on total targets not taking into account any of the factors you are curious about

great questions though, i bet 1st gen stats has

Apke lover but that needs to be quantified. I am a Penn State fan so I root for all Penn State players. Apke as mentioned had the physical tools but they were not translating to the field. Hence ... Curl lover.

All a guy can ask for is a chance. Apke got that.

I liked apke coming out of the combine. I thought with his athletic ability he could be developed. I guess I was wrong

Great athletic attributes and did wow at the combine however, there is this thing called a "willing participant" in putting yourself in harms way to tackle. This is where Curl comes in. Curl is a "willing participant" in the art of tackling and giving up one's self to do so.

Yeah that would be interesting to know. Is a Cam Newton heater thrown to an open WR who gets both hands on the ball, but is only 6 yards beyond the LOS a drop?

Apke was a better version of Mike Mamula(sp) n Adam Archuleta. A awesome combine warrior. His combine score was 1st ballot unanimous choice for the Combine Hall of Fame. In the top 5% of all time regardless of position. I do remember he ran a 4.35 forty n absolutely slayed the cone drills.

One thing that can kill speed or at least negate it is taking bad angles. Something he could get away with in high school n college. Not so much in the NFL.

Yeah, those numbers while still subjective are a better indicator than simply number of targets.

Perhaps this will have @deanpet21 look @ Cam a little more favorably. Of his 16 targets that weren't caught. 10 came in games which Haskins was the starter. Seattle n Carolina. And in his best game this season, at least imo, against Pittsburg, he had 5 catches on 9 targets.

Apke was drafted as a WR which means nothing in college. They want athletes and then teach them to play. He grew every year but if he doesn't run that 4.3 that almost made Deion jump out of the booth as he said white guys don't run that fast he doesn't get drafted. There is also nothing wrong with being a good special teams player but it is only a 3 - 4 year job in today's NFL.

Somebody needs to teach him to take better angles n to stop letting WRs run right past him while he standing around as the last line of defense.

I don't think single high safety is a good position for him. I have said many times I am not in favor of that defense but JDR knows a lot more than me. All that said I didn't think he looked the part in college. He got his chance on his measurables. Who knows what happens to him as far as the NFL goes but he got three years and that is a lot more than a lot of guys can say.
