I don't want your forgiveness. I would rather walk in front of a train before having your forgiveness.

The way I took it, he was not going to agree or disagree with one or the other because there was too small of a sample size to make a determination either way.

But then again, you like to twist things to fit what you want to believe.

wouldn't crown guenther yet either. he's basically a fill-in guy who got promoted from being a line-backers coach, considering that our Head Coach is the primary defensive mind to start with the Bengals probably think we don't really need a strong defensive mind at DC.

Not true.

First, he was wanted as DC in Minn with Zimmer and Gruden in Washington, both. He stayed with Cincinnati because he said he felt a sense of loyalty to them. He is highly regarded. he's not some "fill in".

Also, whatever the background is of the HC, unless that are directly involved, it doesn't mean squat. At some time it might have mattered that Marvin was a great DC, but that was like 12 years ago. He's not telling PG what to do. That's why PG has spent the past 8-9 years studying under MZ.

As for the rest of this: Again, PG came out strong, and teams have adapted to his play calling and tendencies. Now, he's got to make the adjustment to their adjustments.

he stayed in Cincinnati because he knew they are slower to fire inept people who are clearly in over their heads.

why do you think Marvin is still here?

Probably because he has a winning record.

Probably because he's been to the playoffs, what 5 or 6 times since he's been here.

Probably because over the past 3-4 years the Bengals have been relavent in the AFCN title race, with nods to 2005, and 2006.

Probably because he's taken a team that was void of any real NFL talent, a waste-land in F/A, and no real desire for competition, a team run by an owner with no clue, and turned them into, not just a team that competes, but a team that wins, and is expected to win.

Honestly, he's done a pretty damn good job. Yeah, a playoff win would be pretty freakin' nice, but at the end of the day, year in and out, he's turned this into a team that competes for the playoffs and division titles.

That's not to defend Marvin from some of the stupid things he's done, and still does. He has limitations, and there's no doubt about that. I just think, overall, he's done a pretty good job all things considered.

But, if you are using this as your example for people who are around that don't deserve to be...you fail.

Paulie G is definitely qualified to be a D-coordinator. I have no issues with the Bengals hiring him and I don't have issues with anything that he is doing specifically....... But it's hard for any first time coordinator (even those that go on to great success) and we're probably going to have to deal with some growing pains.

I also wonder if Marv mettles more with Paul than he did with Zimmer. Zimmer was already a coaching vet when he got here -- Not sure there needed to be more than one voice in the room.

Yep. Agreed.

I'm not sure if he sticks in on defense or not. Part of me could see it, and another part of me thinks that after 12+ years coaching or whatever it is he's been here, I think by now he knows...he just has to trust the guy to do his job, or he should fire him right now. As you said, there can only be one voice. I think a lesson that Marvin *may* have learned earlier in his coaching with various other DC's.

So, in other words, you have nothing to come back with other than some jacked up picture?

Ok. I gotcha.

my opinion is based on years of history of the Cincinnati Bengals operating habits.

your opinion is based on who Paul Guenther has as friends. or that you think every assistant coach that works for the Bengals is a genius or some shit like that.

what I see is the same old Bengals shit, promoting people who don't even belong because they are 'loyal'

...

sit back and watch for a few years...

I'd love to be wrong about guenther.

The real issue is, you're still stuck in the 90's where everything goes to shit. I couldn't imagine trying to enjoy football that way. I feel sorry for you.

I absolutely think Paul G belongs. He's earned his keep. Look at the development of linebackers since he's been here relative to the train wrecks we had before his time. He paid his dues and he would have been given shots in a number of places.

If we were simply being loyal and cheap our coordinators right now would be Ken Zampese and Jay Hayes. We would have never hired Jay Gruden in 2011 and we would have never brought in Mike Zimmer. The days of promoting guys just because they are on the staff seem to be behind us. Yes we did it last year.... But it was hard to argue hiring Paul G and it was impossible to argue why you wouldn't hire Hue Jackson.

hope you enjoyed that shitty game, which followed that shitty game last week, and precedes the shitty game next week. wait? is this still the 90s? I'm confused.

Eh. I watched. I actually laughed.

Then I spent most of the afternoon watching the Baltimore game against Atlanta since I had several fantasy guys going in that game (Julio, SmithSr, Flacco).

Some teams win. Some teams lose. The Bengals lose. I accepted that a long time ago. It allows me to watch the game and not have a heart attack yelling at the TV anymore.

Maybe that makes me less of a fan, I don't know...but I just don't live and die with them winning/losing. Maybe that's why I have such a calm approach to the team as it is. I've accepted...this is it. It's not getting better because Brown is not firing Lewis...Lewis ain't leaving...this is...it.

good thing about the NFL, there's always something to watch. like manning breaking a record... or something like that.

Agreed.

And Fantasy Football makes teams that you would normally not care about 100% more relavent than, say, 15-20 years ago.

I used to hate Mondays' after a Bengals loss. Especially when I had season tickets from 2002-2006. Gave 'em up after 2006, and the following year I followed a buddy of mine's approach: Bengals sober. He completely gave them up (thus sober), but I root for them, I'll follow them, but I give up the living and dying with each game. No more yelling at the TV. Not more being miserable at 4:10pm on Sunday and most of Monday reading the sports sections/sites.

Don't get me wrong...I want them to do well, I'll watch, but now it's with a different angle. I just don't get fired up about them anymore. Maybe that's why when I talk about Lewis as Coach, or things not changing, and players like MJ being allowed to leave, I just don't get worked up. It is, exactly, what it is. Bengal Football. For better or worse (and mostly worse).
