I agree with you that it is very nice for a self-contained campus. The facilities are beautiful. It's perfectly manicured. There are many solid sports teams. The women all have that "i'm from a country club community and want to look better than my dad's mistress" look. And there are frat parties, which i've never been a fan of, but they seem better than most.
I just don't like the idea of a self-contained campus. Young kids are stupid, and it's nice to be able to escape and go to different scenes than just "frat boy college lifestyle." I don't know if you've been to Madison, but that's my ideal. You have everything there is in Vandy, but there is also a street connecting it to Downtown Madison, with a mingling of young professionals, students, and other groups. And while there are great frat parties, there are also bars for every mood or atmosphere you can imagine (plus, lake and forest and skyscapers and neighborhoods...it's all walkable).
I think we just have different idea of what a nice campus is. I want to know that a city is around me. That's the biggest problem with Vanderbilt. When you want to escape the campus, it's a pain in the ass with big roads everywhere and an ugly expressway separating it from Downtown. And because it's such a pain the ass, people don't leave the campus very much and the lifestyle sort of becomes monotonous and stale. It's a lot like Wash U for many of the students here, except here there is a walking path to some pretty cool areas.
There's no nice way for me to put this so I'll just say it. You don't know what you're talking about.
