Iowa is never going to get over the hump IMO, they are always decent and will win around 8-9 games but they’ll never be a serious contender in the Big 10 as long as Ferentz is the coach. They never have a good offense.

They looked great in the first half
Awesome punt return
Iowa has always been one of those teams that any given week can pull off an upset and beat anyone but as far as consistency, it’s just not there.

Their offense is never good enough for any kind of deep run in the CFP, if they ever even make it there.

Apart from 2003 when they made it to the Orange Bowl and got destroyed by Carson Palmer’s USC and 2015 when they lost to Michigan State in the Big 10 Championship game, they fit this description precisely.

Michigan State went on to get steamrolled by Bama, exact same thing would’ve happened to Iowa.

Oh yeah and the year after that, they made the Rose Bowl and got obliterated by Christian McCaffrey’s 400 all-purpose yards.

That’s the huge problem with Iowa, what potential offensive superstar wants to play there? It’s why mostly OL, DB’s and LB’s get drafted out of Iowa.

How bad is the coaching when players commit incredibly stupid plays that actually costs game. Third and 20, runner out after 14-yard gain and the defense pushes the runner after he is at least 3 and maybe four yards out of bounds.
Was it a message to show how tough he was, probably not that since he pushed the runner in the back. Likely, it cost Iowa the game. The player should have been yanked out of game, and if he had eligibility left be told to go play somewhere else.

Unless of course, the coach is fine with this stupidity and just calls it aggressiveness. I am assuming the coach realizes it is against the rules, but then again who knows for sure.

PSU vs. Boise St.

PSU's D is ranked #7 out of 132 teams. the only 2 real defenses BSU has seen was the #12 and #29 defenses. after that you have to go dumpster diving to find the rest of the D they've seen.

Eh...the flip side of that is BSU has the #3 offense out of 132 teams. PSU has only faced 2 offenses in the top 50 and lost to both.

CFP Quarterfinals predictions

Time for quarterfinal picks! But the thing is, I've already made up my mind about which teams I'm gonna pick. So this will just be a quick pick segment, as well as my reasons for why I picked them (All games on ESPN):

Fiesta Bowl: Penn State vs. Boise State [8:00] (Both @PIBuckeye and @uga8766 made interesting points about tonight's big game. But I think that Penn State's defense will use their extra practice time to devise a way to stop Ashton Jeanty. And when Jeanty is stopped, I don't think the other guys on Boise State will be talented enough to do anything big.)

Tomorrow:
Peach Bowl: Texas vs. Arizona State [1:00]
(I don't wanna sell Arizona State short; they've had a great season up to this point. But when the chips are down in the 2nd half, can Cam Skattebo and Sam Levitt outduel Quinn Ewers and the Texas D? I don't think so. Texas wins, but closer than the experts think.)

Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon [5:00] (Oregon is the new Big 10 champions. Oregon has beaten Ohio State once before this season. So why are they a underdog in this CFP quarterfinal? Is the revenge factor that strong for the Buckeyes? Or are the skeptics just worried about Oregon's offense and it's perceived lack of zing? Just know that things have been whisper-quiet in Eugene, and that calm should help the Ducks win.)

Sugar Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Georgia [8:45] (So despite Georgia being the SEC champions, their game against the Irish is almost a "pick-em". Well, Notre Dame DID get over the CFP hump the last time we saw them, but that was against Indiana. And Georgia may no longer have Carson Beck at QB, but they've been practicing without Beck for a while now. When push comes to shove, Georgia should out-tough Notre Dame and win this.)

Now off to my CBB thread to shut it down. Happy New Year, folks!

Realistically, if any of the favored teams reads and believes the press clippings and feels all they have to do to move on is show up, they can and likely will be defeated.
One year during the Lou Holtz era at Notre Dame they were a prohibited favorite against Michigan State. At halftime the score was 17-17. coming off the field, Holtz was asked what the problem was, his answer was succinct and to the point, "they give scholarships at Michigan State too".

Been pretty impressed with the DL. Even without Graham/Stewart/Grant they've played really well. Good first full game for Marshall too. Wasn't expecting it to be remotely close today.

Michigan beats Bama! LOL so much for Bama being some great team unfairly left out of the playoff - they got beat by 3 very average teams now plus the loss to Tennessee. Bama was just not impressive this year at all.

Boy, Notre Dame sure got lucky not having to face the Alabama offensive juggernaut.

Almost forgot, if not playing for the National Championship, Alabama is not interested in a bowl game. I have heard that song before.

So to sum to up the last few weeks

Bama/SEC fans - " lol Ohio State lost to Michigan! They clearly are overrated . Michigan sucks!!"

Bama/SEC fans- " oh em gee!! Indianas SoS is awful! I cant believe the committee took them ahead of a much better team in Alabama! I mean Indianas best win all season is Michigan! MICHIGAN!"

Bama/SEC fans- " see? Indiana lost by 10 to ND! ND is not even that good. They definitely couldn't beat an SEC team. I mean other than the 1 they beat already.... Bama would've for sure smoked them and no SEC team would ever get clobbered like that in a playoff"

Bama/SEC fans - " i mean sure Tennessee lost by 25 to OSU. But you know OSU is really really good. Clearly the best team playing in the first round. Yes i remember when i said they sucked after they lost to Michigan but this was obviously a much different team today. And that doesn't change the fact Indiana shouldn't have been in over Bama as Bama is obviously the better team"

Bama/SEC fans - " you know sure we lost to Michigan but e didn't really want to be there. Yes i know Michigan had lots of opt outs and we really didn't have any but Michigan won the national title last year you know. They're not so bad"
