HaHa. I guess that would be just fine for a #4 or #5. Zero earned runs and 5 baserunners in 6.2 cuts it in almost every case. Not quite ace material, but just about covers everything else.

I didn't mention the runs. He could have easily given up 2 or 3 runs tonight, and I would still take a 2 run performance.

How Nick pitched tonight is what I would want out of a 4th or 5th starter. Over 6 innings of 5 hit baseball with no walks is just fine.

Really? He went 6.2 with 5 hits, no runs, 0 W's and 5 K's and that's fine from a # 4/5?

So what do you expect from from a # 3?

Honestly rev.....you seem to have some very high expectations.

Heard the same issues about Abreu

Yes, Abreu did miss 23 games once because of bursitis, but it was between 2 and 3 years before he defected. He still had 33 HRs that year though. He had plenty of opportunity to prove that his shoulder problem was no longer affecting him before anyone had to offer him a contract.

Once again, I didn't mention the runs.

Also, I am using the text book definition of the word fine, meaning high quality. That was a high quality start.

He pitched like a number 4 tonight. That's not having way too high expectations. Some nights he won't be so lucky with the LOB%.

Would expect more strikeouts, 7+ innings, and not a lot of foot traffic on the bases. How Derek pitched last night is not what you would expect from a 2. He struggled and gave up too many hits and couldn't find the strike out pitch.

gotta consider the competition and time of season I would think. Most of those Astros are just waiting for the season to be over.

Rev.....you're a stat man......one night a guy gets the breaks with balls not having eyes/terrific catches, etc and some nights they don't......thus the story of baseball.......you're right; some nights will be magic and others will be disasters......story of life and the game.

But in this case, Martinez & Tepesch have shown some growth - maybe a lot really - and we'll see how winter ball and ST works out.

For me, I'm not punting on either/both for being part of the "big picture" in 2015.

Just throwing this out.....but maybe the JD sees one of these guys as a better # 4/5 option than Lewis for 2015.....cheaper/younger works a lot ya know?

Rangers won't be competiting in 2015 if both are in the rotation. Rangers don't even have a number 3 right now anyway so it might not even matter. There is a chance all three guys are back next year and it's just another rebuilding year. Would be a real let down though.

Agreed.

But when his previous 3/4 starts are stellar, # 5 start is a throw-away under Derek's circumstances.

You/me/us didn't expect him to come off such an extended period of injury and come out firing on all cylinders did we?

Regardless, pitchers have their nights, and others which aren't......but I think I know where you're coming from, in that, a # 2 or # 1 is a guy who has 4 of these bad outings a year; not every 4th or 5th time out.

In my opinion they don't have the offense to compete next year the way things stand. If Tepesch and Martinez finish next season with ERAs below 3.50 they still won't have the offense. We can spend a lot of money and get expensive pitching in here and we still won't compete with our offense unless a bunch of guys exceed expectations.

To me the two Nicks are placeholders until guys like Chi Chi, Jackson, and Ortiz arrive. I do think they have done a fine job in maturing into decent pitchers over the course of the last two months though. They will still have some ups and downs, but they have made me feel a lot better about going into next season with them pitching for us.

My starting pitching goal for this offseason is to sign a #3 to a one or two year contract. By that I mean someone that can be expected to have an ERA between 3.50 and 3.75 or so. If we don't get that done and have to go with Yu, Derek, Colby, Nick and Nick that won't bother me too much either.

I wonder how we would rate David Price since he has been with the Tigers based upon the discussions above. For me personally when you realize that Martinez is having to learn while on the job and see how he has pitched lately there is hope for this guy as a starter for this team down the road.

Anyone make note this morning that the Rangers announced Ogando isn't ready for winter ball?

Nope...
Personally, if I never see Ogando on the hill for the Rangers again...i'm completely OK with that.

As for the #1 pick - it appears to be lost. So the Duke RH (Matuella) could be headed to AZ.

Does Houston draft Aiken again @ #2? Or will there be bad blood? Personally, I hope they go after Rodgers (SS).

Which would leave Aiken to be drafted #3 by the Rangers. (ASSUMING COL doesnt catch them in the reverse standings.) :yahoo:

From the DMN:

Have we heard all we're going to hear about Wash's resignation, or do you think there's more to follow?

More to follow. Still trying to sort out why he was accompanied last week by an attorney who specializes in white-collar crime such as investment fraud. Ron Washington raised more questions than he answered in his appearance last week.

Can you see anyone other than Tim Bogar as the next Rangers manager?

No. No one could have done better with this chance than Tim Bogar has. He's primed for this job.

Regarding earlier question, doesn't Bogar decide his staff?

Not if Jon Daniels remains consistent. Remember that he removed Jackie Moore as bench coach and brought in Bogar. Daniels is of the school that sees the manager more as middle management, entrusted to carry out top management's plan. It's becoming the prevalent MO in the game.

LSAT's on saturday. Then I'll finally get to post on here with some regularity. I've missed it lol. People lose interest when I'm watching a baseball game with them and trying to explain the more "internal" things that don't really get noticed. They're just like "WHY IS THAT GUY SWINGING AND THAT GUY RUNNING...AT.THE.SAME.TIME."

The second answer and the third one are inconsistent. If JD remained consistent he would not hire Bogar as Bogar is nothing like Wash.

I think JD lets the new manager hire his own staff. He may offer suggestions, but I think he will leave those decisions to the new manager .

I also don't think Bogar is a slam dunk. He may get the job, but I think JD wants to find out about some other guys. He apparently has already talked to Young so that shows me he hasn't decided on Bogar yet.

Are you saying you think JD is only looking for the next Washington, if he remains "consistent" in his thought process?

I don't see this at all. There's a lot of good managers in MLB and many have varying styles. And each GM can change his mind on what style he wants, depending on what's available.
