On the plane to and from Phoenix, I sat next to Gregg Davis, father of J.D. Davis, who plays for the Houston Astros system. Family is from Elk Grove, just south of Sacramento.

The first game (Monday night) at Camelback, Gregg showed up with his brother from Burbank, and they sat in the first row behind the dugout. It was a surprise to JD, and they had a nice visit. Unfortunately, the kid went 0-4 with 3 K's. The next game he was 1-5 with 3 K's.

On the flight back, Gregg was a little bummed about his son's performance. When we landed, he fired up his phone, and smiled. JD had gone 3-5 with a homer and 3 RBI's. The kid can play, and has serious power, but he does strike out a lot. Glad to see the dad enjoy the games, and the son break the "dad" jinx.

I am sure I will see Gregg (and JD) in Spring Training if I go, or maybe JD will wind up at Fresno. JD was in Lancaster this year, and will probably be in Corpus Christi, but who knows?

Black's average fastball velocity this Fall is 99.22 MPH. In MLB this past season, that only would have been beaten by Aroldis Chapman at 99.46 MPH.

I would have preferred Mejia have a stronger season. He is in the small group of SPs who may be ready to contribute this season.

While a 3.48 ERA is not bad, it would have been a lot better is he were able to dominate.

Now Black, on the other hand, looks ready to push for a job immediately. As does Mac.

Arroyo just made a spectacular play to win the game! A sliding catch in foul ground. The Scorpions are champs!

Arroyo ends it with a very difficult sliding catch of a foul down the third base line.

Williamson didn't K 3 times.

His first out was pretty well hit to right-center, loud contact. Second out was an error.

Interestingly, he came in versus Profar, a switch-hitter. But yeah he's destined for LOOGY status. Osich is Affeldt's replacement as McCormick is Lopez's replacement.

So where does Okert fit in?

So where does Okert fit in?

Okert is more in the Affeldt/Osich mold. He was a starter in college, can go multiple innings and get anybody out. Still needs work in AAA though, he lost his mechanics last year. Also, not saying McCormick is ready, but his path to the bigs will be as a LOOGY.
