How about this for a finish. Johneshwy Fargas (Stokes' favorite) went 3-5 yesterday with a single, triple and homerun. His homer was a two-out, two-strike, WALK-OFF grand slam!
I was going to get around to posting that. I was "watching" that on Gameday last night. What a finish. He's done really well this year, .289 average, speed (46 stolen bases), and he has a cannon for an arm, (he has 10 assists from the outfield!).
How is his defense? Comparable to his bro? Some minor movement. Juan De Paula is currently making his first start in Augusta. He hasn't pitched at this level yet. 4 innings, 1 run, 2 hits, 6 K's so far.
Jacob Heyward was promoted to AAA to close out the season. He's had an interesting season. Jumped from Augusta last year to San Jose this year. he's improved his walk and strikeout rates considerably. Saw an uptick in the power numbers as well, though not as much as you'd like. He's put the ball in play a lot more this year as well.
He's not a super prospect, but has solid raw power (more than his brother, Jason). If he maintains a 13% walk rate, 22% k rate and turns some of those doubles and flyouts into homers, he could be a guy worth keeping an eye on.
How is his defense? Comparable to his bro?
I'm board so I'm going to do my entirely objective 'bests' and 'worsts' from the minor leagues. Team MVP is pretty clear, biggest disappointment, for me, is not necessarily someone who played the worst but just someone who didn't take the leap we though he could. Or was just flat-out awful.
AAA Sacramento:
Team MVP (batter)- Chris Shaw. This one was tough because the guys who were much better were promoted fairly quickly or were promoted. Shaw, while not a great season, did show plenty of power. he hit the most homers in the organization. That counts for something. Slater deserves a mention as well because he killed it down there, in limited time.
Team MVP (pitcher)- Tyler Rogers. This team just kept getting it's best pitchers plucked, but (sorry LHG) this one was about the only rock for the team the entire year. 2.13 ERA in relief and did a little bit of everything in the Pen.
Biggest disappointment (batter)- Ryder Jones. After a really good season in AAA last year, and an extended stay in SF, he took a major step back this year. His walk rate, k rate, ISO, and overall contact all fell dramatically. Still just 24.
Biggest disappointment (pitcher)- Tyler Beede. Probably the easiest guy on this list.
Biggest Surprise (batter)- Alen Hanson. Signed as a MiLB free agent and went ballistic in his first month. Earned a shot with the big league team and cemented his spot. Former top prospect, but had fallen off quite a bit the last two years.
Biggest Surprise (pitcher)- Ray Black. He's always had the stuff, but could never stay healthy. The surprise is that he made it a full (minor league). Obliterated the poor minor league hitters.
AA Richmond:
Team MVP (batter)- Luigi Rodriguez. He didn't finish out the season as the best batter, but he was challenging Ted Williams well into June.
Team MVP (pitcher)- Shaun Anderson. Modest numbers in a pitching environment but held his own. Conner Menez could have challenged him if he was there a bit more.
Biggest disappointment (batter)- Aramis Garcia. Feels a bit unfair to put him here, but he wasn't great for most of the season. He really started to pick things up in July, then was moved up to AAA and eventually SF. You could say guys like Arenado, Jebavy or Davis here, sure, but I didn't really have high expectations for those guys anyway.
Biggest disappointment (pitcher)- Garrett Williams. Like Beede just completely lost his command. Has excellent stuff that he can't control.
Biggest Surprise (batter)- Luigi Rodriguez. I mean who saw this guy hitting .400 in June?
Biggest Surprise (pitcher)- Dillon McNamara. Shout out to Conner Menez and his 11.19 K/9 as a starter. McNamara had an excellent season though and was bought from the Yankees last July. Didn't show much of anything until his breakout this year, now looks like a potential bullpen piece.
A+ San Jose:
Team MVP (batter)- Heath Quinn. Finally a decision that required some debate. Thought about Miller because he played a full season and set career-highs across the board, entrenching himself as the best 2B prospect in the system. But Heath Quinn's numbers were excellent after a tough, injured 2017 season. He's the ideal power hitter for AT&T, solid eye at the plate, gap-to-gap swing, right-handed.
Team MVP (pitcher)- Logan Webb. He was absolute nailz while recovering from TJ. 3 plus pitches, number 2/3 ceiling starter.
Biggest disappointment (batter)- Sandro Fabian. He hits the ball hard and has an ideal swing, with plus outfield defense and some raw power. But he just could figure it out in the most offensive league in organized baseball. He's at risk of getting passed since he'll need to repeat San Jose.
Biggest disappointment (pitcher)- Melvin Adon. It wasn't a bad season, per say, but it wasn't what we wanted to see. He has the best fastball in the system, which says a lot because the Giants have quite a few, but he's just a raw thrower.
Biggest Surprise (batter)- Jacob Heyward. He's flown under the rader thus far, but just turned in a pretty solid season in San Jose. Wasn't amazing, but there's quite a bit of power in his bat that's still untapped. Could take off if it happens.
Biggest Surprise (pitcher)- Logan Webb. Off the radar for two years recovering from injury then burst on the scene this year.
A Augusta:
Team MVP (batter)- Manuel Geraldo. He fell off a cliff for a stretch, but was the team's most consistent hitter. he's a good defensive SS with speed, possible utility player in the future unless he develops some more pop then he has a shot at being a low-end starter.
Team MVP (pitcher)- Aaron Phillips. John Gavin was close here, but Phillips was throwing darts all season and is a late-bloomer alert. Had 120 Ks to 16 walks in 105 innings. His fastball is in the low 90s, but he has a truly special curveball. Quite a few guys could be mentioned here, TBH. Augusta had a real solid staff.
Biggest disappointment (batter)- Jacob Gonzalez. I'm sure many people would put Heliot Ramos here, but what I saw from him was more encouraging than Gonzalez. Gonzo was drafted to be a power bat, and he could never get anything going. He remained rather consistent all year, just consistently bleh.
Biggest disappointment (pitcher)- Garrett Cave. Among all the starters on the staff (including the now traded Jason Bahr), Cave has the biggest ceiling but wasn't all the good. Command (surprise) was his biggest issue.
Biggest Surprise (batter)- Woof..... I'll say the biggest surprise is how collectively bad they were in the second half.
Biggest Surprise (pitcher)- Camilo Doval. If you had been listening to me last year, then he shouldn't surprise you. But alas here he is. He had the worst 3 games to open the season imaginable, but wipe those game away and he had a 1.74 ERA over 51.2 innings with 75 K's, 19 BBs, and a .182 BAA. This is the kid who has a cutter that is only matched by Kenly Jansen (when he knows where it's going).
A- Salem-Keizer:
Team MVP (batter)- Joey Bart. This was a lot harder than you would think. They had NINE players with an OPS over .800 and semi-regular playing time. Bart finished with the highest OPS on the team while catching most of the time so he gets the nod.
Team MVP (pitcher)- Greg Santos/Jesus Tona. This one was tough as well. Tona put up absurd numbers in relief, but Santos was the 18 year old who jumped all the way from the DSL and was pitching excellent until he got hit in the head. Amazingly he came back a few weeks later and pitched in two more games. He didn't pitch well and it hurt his overall numbers, but that shouldn't take away his huge leap this season. Highest-ceiling pitcher in the system.
Biggest disappointment (batter)- Literally can't be disappointed with how this group performed.
Biggest disappointment (pitcher)- Keaton Winn. IDK how this team didn't make the playoffs tbh. They had real solid pitching to go with the best offense. Winn wasn't even that bad, but he had quite a but of hype out of the draft and was just average.
Biggest Surprise (batter)- Kyle McPherson (or just throw a dart). It's either him or David Villar or any of the nine guys with OPS over .800 not named Bart. McPherson was a 26th round pick last year (shortstop) and hit .237 in Arizona. I'm really curious how this group moves up next year, though.
Biggest Surprise (pitcher)- Jesus Tona. A converted catcher. Dude had only pitched 3.1 innings in his life coming into this year and has a 0.87 ERA in the second-biggest offensive minor league stop.
Rookie AZL and DSL:
There's too much randomness to pick on certain guys so I'll just list noteworthy guys.
Luis Toribio from the DSL was by-far the best hitter. Had a tough second-half but showed good walk rate and the best power in the league, both excellent signs.
Yorlis Rodriguez skipped over the DSL and was one of the best hitters in Arizona. Just 18 years old out of Cuba.
Fabian Pena, Giants 25th round pick this year, had an excellent debut.
Alexander Canario had a terrible start and a tough finish, but was the super-star hitter in the middle we wanted to see. Still just 18, could slow play him again.
