AFL Star game is tonight, on MLB Network. Christian Arroyo is leading off and playing second base. Don't look into him playing second base, this is a one-game thing.

Ray Black is also on the team, look for him to pitch late in the game.

Ray Black with a 1-2-3 inning on 8 pitches. They went 99, 98, 100, 99, 100, 101, 84, 99. This isn't some straight fastball either, it has late life. Kruk always calls it "second stage hop", and Black isn't a max effort guy, he throws with ease. I jumped the gun expecting he could make his debut in SF this last September, but I really think that if he stays healthy he will make his debut in 2016.

Arroyo 1-2, with a caught stealing. Don't know why they moved him over to second in favor of Pinder at SS. Pinder didn't look all the great with the glove tonight.

Thanks for the post, I was just about to do that.

Black looked great, didn't he? I am a little worried about his health, but he could be a great addition to the pen.

Health is certainly still a concern. The Giants are taking baby steps with him. They only allowed him to pitch every 3rd day a lot last year, at one point putting him in the rotation to get him some innings because he was falling behind. The broadcast brought up Josh Osich as a comp, more for how the Giants handled his injury history. He always had big league stuff, and when the Giants took the training wheels off this year, it was no surprise he made the jump from AA to MLB, despite the lack of consistent innings. The idea is that Ray Black has similar results. When those training wheels come off, look out.

Ray Black throws fastball fast, impresses the heck out of the Arizona Fall League

Please enjoy this video of Ray Black, who has thrown a fastball 104 danged miles per hour in the Arizona Fall League, and I don't care if it was a hot gun. It's hot now.

The last time a Giants pitcher threw 101 mph in the majors was Erik Cordier. The last time a Giants pitcher threw 102 mph was ... no, I'm going to make you guess. The answer is at the end. In the AFL Fall Stars Game, Black threw only 101 mph. Maybe there's something wrong with him.

I can see Black having a very similar year in 2016 that Osich had in 2015.

(11/9) Scorpions won today, 10-8 to improve to 14-7

Hitters

Christian Arroyo DNP

Mac Williamson 3-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 OF assists (both at 2B), 1 CS, 1 PO at 1st (Not a great baserunning night from Mac) (.400)

Austin Slater DNP

Pitchers

Ray Black DNP

Phil McCormick 1.0-1-0-0-0-1 (3.00)

Adalberto Mejia DNP

Dan Slania (BS, 1) 2.0-3-1-1-0-5 (3.00)

I was at the game in Glendale between the Solar Sox and the Desert Dogs. Not much to report. Good game. Got a little chilly at the end. Tomorrow I will see the Scorpions play the night game, after taking in a game at Salt River Fields, and an early dinner at Lolo's Chicken and Waffles.

Why would you bring that up!? :heh: Always the first place we go in Scottsdale

Slania has had a pretty good AFL. 9IP, 10H, 12/1 K/BB. He had a huge jump in strikeouts and cut down his walks in 2015. Deceptive delivery, mid 90s fastball and a forkball, which is pretty cool.

Last spring, my son and I were at Lolo's and sat across from the entire Dallas Mavericks team. Several of them had once played for the Suns, so they seemed to know people. Those guys were tall!

Arroyo, Mac and Slater starting tonight. Cool and breezy, wind blowing out to right at Scottsdale. Will update later. BTW, "Betty's B00b" was delicious at Lo-Lo's.

(11/10) Scorpions won today, 5-4 to improve to 15-7

Hitters

Christian Arroyo 1-3, run, K (.339)

Mac Williamson 0-2, run, RBI sac fly, walk, 2 K's (.385)

Austin Slater 2-4, 2 RBIs, stolen base (3) (.271)

Pitchers

Ray Black (S, 1) 1.0-1-0-0-1-2 (1.29)

Phil McCormick 1.0-3-3-2-1-1 (5.14)

Adalberto Mejia DNP

Dan Slania DNP

Slater got the Scorpions on the board with a 2-run single in the 4th. Mac added a Sac Fly in the 5th.

McCormick got bashed around a little.

Black was filthy. No radar gun at the ballpark.

Desert Dogs had 10 walks and were 3-15 with RISP.

Back at it tomorrow at 3:05 out at Camelback in Glendale.

I was sitting along the RF line in the first row. Several of the Giants (Arroyo, Mac, Slater, McCormick, Black, Slania) came by to sign things before the game. They spent a good deal of time talking with the fans. Arroyo is the youngest guy on the team, but he appears to be the captain of the team, or at least one of the leaders.

this has been the primary scouting report on him since he was drafted. Because of this, I am very hesitant to include him in any trade talks, even though he would probably bring back the biggest haul of any of our kids.

I have read a couple different articles, blogs, or whatever calling Arroyo "Posey-Lite", and explaining the "lite" pertaining to Arroyo's lighter bat from Posey with same leadership skills.

Tomorrow is my last day here, and the Scorpions are at home in Scottsdale. I am hoping that Mejia will pitch. It's been great to connect with some new friends in a relaxed atmosphere.

The AFL has 7 games left, then the championship on 11/21.
