Meh. Was a death by a thousand cuts. Cortes couldn't locate for shit, and even then they weren't making solid contact. Ball just found holes, or was misplayed by the right fielder.

He was due for a bad game……turn the page

Couple of clunkers in a row in mid July.

Hilarious he gave up 6 ER on July 14th and still threw 9 innings. My how the game has changed.

That was almost exactly the time Billy gave his famous "Born and convicted liar" presser and quit. What an improbable season that was all the way around.
I always remember Don Lemon taking over and he was literally the polar opposite of Billy. I'm not sure which show it was maybe This Week In Baseball where they showed a bunch of clips of Billy screaming at an ump and after each clip a picture of Lemon in the dugout expressionless

LOL

Lem always looked like he was sleeping in the dugout, but he was the perfect guy at the perfect time-Billy was one of the best managers this game has ever seen, but the drama between him and George and him and Reggie were not doing the club any favors. It wasn't a concidence they caught fire as soon as Lem got there. The tabloids going on strike that summer didn't hurt either.

The Billy/George dynamic was patently insane. 5 fucking times he fired him and word was he was about to bring him back again when he died. I can't imagine anything like that happening today.

And that July he was about to be fired, but he beat big George to the punch and resigned. Then a few weeks later at old timers day the Yankees announced he was coming back to manage in 1980. Not the next year, but the year after. I was just a kid and I loved me some Billy Martin, but yeah, in hindsight it was all batshit crazy.

They were like Richard Burton & Liz Taylor…..just a bad marriage

How many owners paid a PI to get dirt on one of their best players just to get out of the contract?

People, especially younger people tend to forget all of George's warts. He also fired Yogi after less than a quarter season and Yogi didn't go to the Stadium for 20 years. He fired 2 managers that went on to wins rings (Piniella and Howser), he had two GM's quit right after winning a ring (Watson and Paul) . He got thrown out of the league twice and they built the late 90's dynasty after he got suspended.
He also had no patience for young players and traded away Fred McGriff, Luis Rijo, Doug Drabek, Jay Buhner, Al Leiter and a bunch of other good young talent and each time he seemed to get back Claudel Washington or Luis Polonia.

I remember watching a replay of the 3 home run game in the 1977 World Series, Howard Cosell was grumbling during the game about the Yankees and George ruining baseball because of FAs. We didn't get all the news in Virginia that y'all would get in NY about what George was doing, but we head enough.

My uncle worked for the Mets as a scout and my cousins would ride me about being a Yankees fan over George.

When it was announced at Yankee Stadium that George had been suspended there was a huge round of applause.

On the other side, George could be very charitable He would pay for funerals for poor people who lost family members in fires in the Bronx. He funded and founded the silver shield foundation which supports families of public servants killed in the line of duty.

That was the best thing to happen to the Yankees. Steinbrenner was banned for 2 years and Gene Michael was able to build the mid to late 90s dynasty with zero interference. Remember, George wanted to trade Pettitte to Philadelphia and Rivera to Seattle for Felix fucking Fermin.

Thank god for Howie Spira I say!
