Now, why would anybody think, money buys championships?
Cue the Ohtani contract talks.
Ohtani = championships? Someone tell that to the Angels, he doesn't even = playoffs so far.

Yeah the Angels are an example of a franchise trying to buy a team and it not working out.

Since the start of 2022, the Texas Rangers have added nearly ONE BILLION DOLLARS in new contracts.
I guess a team can buy a world series championship..........until they get beat by the Snakes.

There are a few high quality PBS cooking shows out there.

No Passport Required had a Detroit episode a little while back. That prolly hurt the Tigers viewership a bit.

And this year marked the first time we’ve ever had a flamingo in the state. A lot of eyes spent their free time birdwatching. Hoping for a glimpse of that pink dinosaur.

I call BS on this. I have black and orange flamingoes in my yard every Halloween. I have pink flamingoes all over my house. Unfortunenly my granddaughter loves those little shits.

Has your granddaughter ever been a pink flamingo for Halloween?

I think that’d be a cool costume.

And of course, as predicted, the TV ratings for the third game of this World Series were the worst in World Series history.
What a surprise.
9.3 million viewers.............

The Cubs vs. Cleveland in the 7th game of the 2016 World Series had 23.6 million viewers.

Far from buying a team, nothing close to the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies.

Rangers were 15th in salary in 2022.
20th in 2021
15th in 2020

Really the only year they spent close to the top was the summer of 2022-(2023 season) and at the trade deadline. All these other teams spent more over a longer period of time and have nothing to show for it.

Seager $325M
Semien $175M
Scherzer $130M
DeGrom $185M
Gray $56M

That's $871M. They just so happened to come in the same season. Payroll still 4th.

The Texas Rangers have this season, 4 players who make 20 mil or more in 2023.
7 players who make 10 mil or more in 2023

DeGrom (waste of money)... 37 mil
Seeger ...32 mil
Semien......25 mil
Scherzer (waste of money part 2) 22.5 mil

That's a total of 116.5 mil in 4 players
Texas Rangers have a 2023 total team salary of 251 mil

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Arizona Diamondbacks have ZERO players who make 20 mil in 2023
The Arizona Diamondbacks have 2 players who make 10 mil or more (no longer on the team) in 2023
The Arizona Diamondbacks have a 2023 total team salary of 119 mil.

So what? Isn't that what everyone wants, for their owners to spend money to make the team better?

Exactly. I actually soured on baseball for years because my team would never spend money. We let a homegrown San Diego kid (Adrian Gonzalez) go to Boston (then LA) because we couldn't pay him. I always thought my team could never win because of spending.

Now we have an owner willing to spend, and it's exciting. We're still a small market, but we have a super rich owner. And it's great. Padres sold out 61 games in a down year this year.

Can't just be willing to spend, but have to also have the right FO to know who to spend big on. Look at the Mets and Yankee Doodles.

That's what happens when young guys outperform their early contract years. The Diamondbacks are a year ahead of schedule. Corbin Carroll, one of their best players this year made 1.6 mil. Now that they had this postseason success, if the Dbacks have typical ownership, this offseason is where they will probably look to "buy" a couple pieces to give them an even better chance of reaching the postseason again.

The template to build a championship team was basically started by Theo Epstein and the Red Sox.
And Theo's template was carried to the Chicago Cubs and later used by the Houston Astros.

Lose 100 game seasons, tank for 2 or 3 seasons. Trade any players of value for draft picks or prospects.
Go cheap with a roster, and add veteran players.

Now days, the template is, just be spend crazy..........outspend your competition. The players are happy ... see the CBA

Yankees .........the last 25 seasons AVERAGE the highest opening day team salaries. They've made the post season 21 of those seasons.
The Mets failed at it.
The Phillies, Padres, Astros, Dodgers, Rangers, and Braves are annually in the $200,000,000+ club.

The Rangers, in a year and a half, spent almost one billion dollars in salaries.
251 mil in team salary this season. 116 mil in 4 players for 2023.

and hardly anybody watched the World Series..........or cared......

The lowest TV ratings in televised world series history. Uh oh

The Red Sox were 2nd in payroll behind the Yankees when they won their WS and they were willing to keep spending.
Cubs were 6th and they kept paying until they realized those players weren’t worth it. Those teams were similar to the same blueprint almost any team has to take unless we are talking the Royals.

They have a nicr farm system and develop young talent.
They sign a big-time FA or two.
If their success continues they pay those young players, unfortubanately, for the Cubs they sold and went into another rebuild. Now they will they another roster with young talent and they will SPEND. It all revolves around an owner that will spend and a GM that make the moves with that money.

So you reference the Rangers who were 4th in salaries but you say the Red Sox and Cubd had the right blueprint. It’s the same blueprint. I will say the Red Sox did it with way more success. The Rangers we don’t know yet. If the Rangers “bought” a championship then that’s what teams have been doing for quite awhile in baseball. Ask the Yankees.

This is why baseball, the system is broken-not the game. They need a cap ceiling and floor. Ohtani will make more than about 13 different franchises payroll in 2024 as of right now.
