Yup, $230 million

They have become what they always despised, and i love every second of it

206 million. Panda Bear still haunts this team. As does Hanley Ramrize.

The Red Sox have been no different than the Yankees for 15 years.

Then he wouldn't have negotiated the opt out in there. The opt out is player-friendly and is a way for the team to try to entice a player to sign without adding extra money. So if he wasn't going to opt out after playing well for 2 years, then he wouldn't have negotiated to get them included.

Now that makes total sense.........I just think this trend of market correction is very real, and I dont see it being reversed for anyone outside of the 20 something Machado/Harper types

Oh I think youre nuts.........In this current market? I dont think a 33 year old David Price would ever see 4/127

I mean, he would have to be like off the charts incredible, which IMO, those days are long gone

Solid, very good, still possible tho
If he has a rebound season? I disagree. And it's not "in this current market" it's in next year's market. Pitchers are gonna get paid and teams are ramping up for next offseason. Not everyone is going to get Harper/Machado so there will be cash out there.

It's unlikely, but I can see him convincing himself that he can talk a team into signing him to a longer deal.

And full disclosure, my Yankee payroll approach has always been "Not my Money, just Win"

So Im just busting balls to the Sox fans that have always humped it

I usually agree with your takes, I couldnt dis-agree more here.....Health/Inefectiveness, toss in a sprinkle of him not having a great reputation in the clubhouse, he would have to go 22-3 with a 2.40 and a CY Young, and I think even he would still have to think about it

It's a combination of things. And Eric Hosmer did just get 8 years. I can see Martinez signing something like 5/90 in 2020 with another 2-year opt out included.

Any Red Sox fan who has been humping that issue for the last 10 years is either an idiot or has not been paying any attention at all. The days of Yankee financial domination have long been over.

2016 he was good, not great, but advanced metrics show that this was at least partially due to luck.

2017 was health and he was effective when he came back.

2018, if he puts it together, it lends credence to the above. As for the clubhouse, apparently his teammates love him. While he's a bitch to the media, it isn't a clubhouse problem from what I can tell. He also really doesn't love it here, so he may take a longer deal that is a lower AAV in order to leave.

Like I said, I think he stays, but it's still possible he leaves. But I was responding to you saying that "Price was never going to opt out". If he put up numbers from 2016-2018 that matched his 2013-2015, he would have opted out.

Yeah, part of me thinking he "would never opt out" was my speculation that as he got older, he would not maintain the greatness, one thing that kept getting discussed was the million innings on the arm for a guy his age

I dont know pal, 2016 being "ok", 2017 being a complete disaster outside of a good stretch as a reliever

Think it would take more than one great season for a team to say, "yeah lets give that 34 year old 127mill"

He'll be 33. 2016 he was good, not just okay. 2017 he was hurt, that's not disastrous.

If he has an excellent season this year, where teams are going to have money and the free agent pitcher market isn't great. I can see it happening.

Ineffective/Hurt for a 30+ pitcher, I dont think "disaster" is that far off, especially for a team looking to invest $120+ million

Again, we will see, I think he will have to be absolutely phenomenal, and I honestly do not expect that, not in the AL East, too many rough outings hes gonna run into

The Sox are stuck with the Price contract and there is no way that won't be painful in 2021 and 2022.

I think Price can bounce back and pitch well. But no one is giving a 33 year David Price more than 4 years 120 million or even that much. Especially not in next year's FA class.

2017: $30M + 74 innings pitched = Disastrous.....

Not disastrous in terms of his future salary prospects, obviously.

The fact that next year's FA class is good helps Price, it doesn't hurt him.

Obviously we are talking about in terms of his future salary potential. In which case, if he had an excellent 2018, he would be 2 years removed from said injury going into 2019.

How do you figure that?

You seriously think someone is going to be willing to give David Price a contract better than 4 years 120 million?
