He's likely cost himself more long-term money by not signing last year. Not only would he have likely seen the entirety of his contract, as the Bengals often do, but he would have hit the market again at 28(IIRC) and had a few more peak seasons available to offer to another solid contract. Now, he'll likely sign a big-time 5 year deal, that he'll only see 3 years of money, then end up back on the market at 30-31+ and likely past his peak.It's good Bates came back, but it's no need for him really. He's gone after this season anyways. Should've traded him while his stock was at peak. But at least they're smart enough now to not overpay.
