I haven't had kids yet. But when I do, I may or may not use corporal punishment. I haven't decided yet. Just know that it is the most effective deterrent for a young kid.

The fear is the deterrent. At that age my dad could have spoke to me in a gruff voice and scared me.

Apparently, it builds character and makes children better behaved.

I remember the first time I had to punish my 4 year old daughter. My mother had scrimp and save for a stereo and we were invited over to admire it. My daughter just won't leave it alone, despite being pulled away from it a few times and told not to touch. I ended up giving her a smart slap on the wrist. To this day I still remember the look on her face and it makes my heart hurt. I wish someone else had step forward and put a stop to her trying to play with that stereo, but it had to be done. Some times you just have to apply physical measures.

You have kids?

He beat his kid with a switch. Ordinarily, I would be fine. But after looking at the photos, I understand why his wife was upset. The marks looked like he was lashed.
His ex-wife probably knew Adrian spanked the child and then took him to the doctor out of spite. Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn.

My kids are too young to discipline.

Three daughters and I can discipline just as effectively by withholding a toy (or in the case of my oldest, her iPhone).

If you do use corporal punishment on your children, please don't do it in public and do not leave marks. Many of us were born before corporal punishment was frowned upon.

Take it from a former foster parent who had to learn how to learn a new method of discipline, there are people who will no hesitate to contact the authorities if they see a parent using corporal punishment.

Personally, a smack on the bottom is fine, as I see it, but AP went well beyond that.

This is crazy. AP is a beast. 6'3 of pure muscle. Him hitting a child is multiplied with what I could do. He went too far....must have been doing it for a while .

I'm 100% in agreement with you Harold ... I hold the same line you do ... my eyes do not deceive with what I see in the world today.

However, I even started a thread in the PF a long time ago on this very same topic with kid's behavior these days being way worse than when I grew up. I pretty much got bombarded with these stats that other folks are referring to in this thread regarding violent crime being down ... it does appear to be a fact.

That said, violent crime may be down, but the utter disrespect and the 'who gives a shit' attitude is everywhere with kids today. The overall piss poor behavior & attitudes are over the top.

As an older millennial, I will say that I have met plenty of disrespectful Gen X's and Boomers who I don't respect much as a result. That said, things are getting worse more on the whole as time continues.

What makes you think he had been doing it for a while?

I had the opposite impression.

I was going to mention something like this.

If you ask a 10yr old to choose between getting the switch or taking phone away for a week as a form of punishment, safe too say they would choose getting the switch.

When I'm in Bama I see folks spank their kids in public a lot and no one thinks twice about it. I don't think there is one right answer to raising kids, but I do think it looks like AP stepped over the line that as a society we have to have at some point.
