Have you heard of the, for the lack of a better term, "great hitter effect"...Jeff Kent made a killing hitting next to Bond for example, Roger Maris hit 62 homers behind Mickey Mantle...look at Infante's average now compared to when he was hitting in front of Miggy.

When you have such an intimidating hitter like Miggy, it affects how pitchers pitch. They don't want to walk the guys in front of him, so they throw more strikes. They try and give Miggy crap pitches, if they walk him so be it. Then they have to throw more strikes to the guys behind him.

V Mart wouldn't sniff 19 hrs batting behind Hosmer.

Again, You take Miggy out of the Tigers lineup and they are pretty average, you swap Hosmer and Miggy and the Royals lineup is much better than the tigers and Butler is in double digit HR area. Ted Williams had the same effect.

Is that a stat? :boink:or is there no answer other than a very strong opinion that makes great sense...

Yes, I am being serious and not fucking with you. I actually started looking at Baseball Reference in spare time. Maybe I do not need to unless I am bored, because otherwise basic stats from MLB and say ESPN and FOX will do.

When did infante hit in front of miggy? Tori hunter batted 2nd last yr....and what does hitting AFTER someone have to do with their power numbers? Usually you want to hit IN FRONT of miggy...you would think teams wouldnt pitch to vmart with no proven number 5 hitter....but JD is giving him protection now.

Hitting IN FRONT of miggy usually means you are going to get a good fastball...dont want to walk anyone in front of him....i was worried vmart would get pitched around this yr because i thought our 5-9 hitters were worse this yr. and vmarts crushing it and miggy isnt even having a miggy season by his standards. But he is warming up.

The Martinez boys and Kinsler have been behind this lastest surge and actually getting production from all over. Funny thing is Miggy has been off his game during this 7 game stretch. went 0-4 other day. A bunch of LOB and hitting in to twin killings to rally kill. Granite he still gets his hits, just Miggy is not carrying the team or being the total catalyst right now. That I like immensely!!

I am not sure if its a stat, I am guessing somewhere someone has made it stat, they stat everything, I know I have heard plenty of talk shows, baseball analysts, etc talk plenty about it.

Butler may never hit double digit homers again. Wouldn't matter if Cobb and Bonds were in front of, with Gehrig, Ruth and Williams behind.

lol

Ok, so last year Hunter got the Miggy advantage, great point, Infante the year before?

I think I explained it quite well even for you. They don't want to make mistakes with the SuperStar so they give better pitches to those before and after. A great hitter effects the 2 guys in front of him and the guy behind him, if he is any good, the guy behind him. Its been like that since baseball has been played, its not new. JD wasn't hitting like this in Houston before being released, now he looks like a potential all star.

You have a guy protecting the 3 hitter for that very reason.

Billy Butler fucking sucks. I hate the DH on account of schlubs like him. (Now that I've got that off my chest, Im off to get a Slurpee.)

Got to agree, I shouldn't have hated on Fielder so much last year, who says karma isn't real.

In all fairness, he was ages 35-40 in his LA/HOU years, so I generally would expect declined production from when he was ages 29-34.

Do you really not understand the concept of scarcity value? You must certainly think that a catcher who hits .300 with 30 HR is clearly inferior to a 1st baseman who hits .305 with 32 HR...because after all, why does position matter?

Are you factoring in windchill?

I wasn't cherry picking...right now, most everyone other than Tigers fans would take Trout over Miggy...Youth, speed, defense, hitting...in every facit of the game...choosing RISP as your stat just goes to show that you have to find something to show Miggy is better at.

Like it or not, people will take the early 20's guy over early 30's guy, especially when the hitting is almost equal now...trout is going upward, if you don't think Miggy peaked with a Triple Crown, that means you actually think he is going to get another one....not a chance, zero.

At this point in their respective careers of course I would take trout over miggy. With that being said miggy is still currently the better player. If at the end of the season, trout puts up better numbers I wont have a problem admitting it. He hasnt yet, someday he will.

Stan, you are kind of a pretentious prick eh? Whats with the condescending remarks toward cleaves? Maybe IM missing something, maybe he did the same to you at one point. Either way the economics and math comments arent really necessary to make your point.

just let it go Cleaves, Miggy has been insaine good for a while now, he can't stay the best in the game for the rest of his career.. Everyone saw Miggy coming over Pujols and and now watching Trout coming over Miggy, its a natural occurance.

I hated Fielder, igleses, Coke, Avila and Vice...the tigers, ehhh, just the team with a target on their backs for the Royals. You can't win unless you know what your facing.

Dabums, the voice of reason all of the sud.

Fister and Porcello were both there at the same time, Smyly was Fister's replacement. That was a really good pitching performance either way though.

You may have missed rubys point.

I was most upset at smyly leaving the pen and losing one of our better RP. If this team can get that pen fixed....we will be fine. Shutout had to help the tigers team ERA.

I was also upset that fister was traded instead of max.

Correct.

Cleaves for whatever reason has always been a prick to anyone who doesn't agree with his stance. There are plenty on here you could have a good debate/argument with (yourself, broncosmitty, navamind, etc), but with cleaves, if you don't agree with him, you're a stat nerd who never played the game and/or someone on the Tigers must've banged your mom.
