Yes, he mentioned defense as to why Verlander's ERA is above 4. I take that as bad D and fielding errors are to blame for his inflated ERA. Why not just blame Verlander in the first place instead of passing the blame. He's not having a Cy Young type season, deal with it.

Actually errors do have an affect on a pitchers ERA, it affects his pitch count which in turn could allow him to only go 6 innings instead of 7 which could affect his ERA.

I am basing my arguments based on empirical data. The DRS of the Tigers is bad... their UZR isn't any more encouraging.

I don't think anyone's trying to suggest he is having a CYA caliber season. He's clearly on the decline. His strikeout rate's dropped from 8.9 in 2013 to 6.4. Not only is that a huge drop, but 6.4 is below average. His walk rate's also up to 3.7, which is high. But I don't think it's unfair to suggest the Tigers defense has hurt him to an extent, as they rank near the bottom in most defensive metrics.

Granted, he shouldn't be falling off like he has been. Seems like there's a good chance he's hurt.
