LaMichael James - RB - 49ers

49ers RB/KR LaMichael James was carted off the field during Sunday's practice with an apparent left arm injury.

The injury appeared to be James' wrist or arm, and the extent is unknown. It's another running back blow after San Francisco lost Kendall Hunter to a torn ACL. Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde, and Jewel Hampton are the Niners' only healthy backs. Marcus Lattimore (knee, hamstring) remains on the active/PUP list.

Jul 27 - 7:14 PM

Dislocated elbow. He's out for one month.

Dislocated elbow sounds painful, but he'll recover. Not like he's a baseball pitcher or something.

Tough to say. Odds are we'll be worse, but you would have said that going into 2011 as well. I expect Reid to be a little better, Bethea to be slightly worse than Whitner but with fewer penalties, Brock to be probably about where he ended the season (room to grow, but he played quite well down the stretch), and Culliver probably to be a bit of a downgrade. The biggest questions are with Culliver and nickel D. I didn't think Rogers was great in the nickel last year, but that may be in part because of a few shaky games.

I think the front seven could be better, though, particularly by the end of the year. Tank and Dial have been looking very good according to reports. The Cowboy is healthy. Ray Mac should be able to put together another year about where he was last year, and TJE should be better. Lemonier should be able to play more. We can put together a really good rotation this year and keep our guys fresh and hungry. Hopefully Fangio will do it. That could easily offset any falloff in secondary play IMO.

So we have Culliver-Brock as our starting CB's? Who the hell am I missing? I need to get back in the swing of things..

A fourth-round pick in 2012, Looney is perhaps best known for a low hit in a preseason game last year on former Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams. Looney claimed in the aftermath of the incident that he’s not a dirty player.

Forgot about that. We'll have a chance for a couple re-matches of that when we play Seattle this year, if Looney is playing.

I feel at worst we have a very average secondary but I'm starting to have more hope that it could actually be pretty good this season.

Reid should be better this season.

Bethea I expect will be better in coverage than Whitner but won't have nearly the physical presence.

Brock has grown and still seems to continue to grow and fits the #2 CB role well.

Culliver is the biggest question mark because he lacks experience and he's coming off a knee injury which is notorious for taking a while for DBs to fully bounce back from. The plus side though is he's bigger, stronger and faster than Brown was so from a physical standpoint he has more potential to be a more effective CB than Brown.

Ward is obviously another question mark but if he can live up to the hype him being able to man the slot and be a ball hawk will be huge for us imo. Rogers was ok in the slot but he was prone to getting torched by the faster and better slot guys in the league. Considering who we see in our division and potentially in the playoffs being able to handle to slot will be critical.
