Not sure why this is hard for some folks to grasp (not just you). If, for example, a team goes into the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead, then the team they are playing outscores them by 11 in the 4th quarter to win the game. It can be said that the team that lost played better for 3 quarters, but fell apart in the 4th.

Heck, we saw USC do that several times during the schollie reductions.
Yes I agree to a point. But the game is a 4 quarter game and if you let a team beat you in the 4th quarter, then you didn't play better for the whole 4 quarters, did you?

You're apparently still missing the point. It was stated that Portland outplayed the Warriors for much of the series. However, the Warriors had the answer in the 4th quarter in every game but 1.

The point made wasn't that you can outplay a team for 4 quarters and lose, that doesn't happen. However, what does happen is that a team can get outplayed for most of a game and still win.

So if team-a leads after 3 quarters, clearly they were outplaying team-b for 3 quarters, right?

But if team-b takes the lead in the fourth, they only outplayed team-a in the fourth?

That is absurd.

A game is 4 quarters (and maybe OT). The game is not judged like a boxing match or MMA fight. While the winner of the game is not always the team that played better (refs making bad, one sided calls; continuous lucky-as-shit shots, etc), it usually is. The game must be viewed in its entirety, because all of it matters.

The Blazers are a very good team. They made every game a nail-biter. No disrespect intended, but the Warriors won 4 of the games, and they were the clear better team. The Warriors are an all-time team, though. Losing to them is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Another not grasping the point.

Here is pretty much a perfect example...game 7 of the 2000 WCF between the Lakers and Blazers. The Blazers didn't just outplay the Lakers for most of the game, they kicked the Lakers asses for most of the game. They built up a 71-55 lead and led 71-58 when the 4th quarter started.

Clearly, the Blazers outplayed the Lakers for the first 3 quarters of that game. The Lakers then went on to outscore the Blazers 31-13 in the 4th quarter to win the game.

At the end of 4 quarters, the Lakers out scored the Blazers 89-84. Clearly, the Lakers outplayed the Blazers for the first 4 quarters of that game.

And why do you want to ignore the 2nd quarter, where the Lakers out scored the Blazers?

:L The conversation wasn't about outplaying a team for 4 quarters. It's really not as difficult to grasp as you are making it.

Because it doesn't change the fact that the Lakers were badly outplayed for most of that game.

Another good example of this is the Heat/Spurs Game 6 of 2013 Finals. San Antonio clearly were the better team but due to a Ray Allen 3 and solid play in OT, the heat won. Spurs did outplay them though

But the Blazers were outplayed for the entirety of the game. Looking at anything other than that is cherry-picking. You look at the first 3 quarters as a whole, burying the second quarter as part of the whole and call that "clearly". Yet, when I look at the entire 4 quarters, I am "missing the point".

If the 4th quarter had been the 1st quarter instead, the Lakers would have led the entire game, and the Blazers never would have lead.

A regulation NBA game is 48 minutes. Not 36.

If you look at only the possessions where the Lakers scored, they CLEARLY outplayed the Blazers.

Okay fair enough, but I have and always will go by the final score of any game. :-)

Yes it is hard to grasp. Who won the frigging game? That's the most important thing.

Yep the team to score the most points of ANY game, is the winner of that game.
