I have been hit in the face many times playing basketball. I’ve had black eyes, a broken nose had a tooth knocked out and another occasion a tooth go through my lip.

Never once did I think any of the plays that caused those were intentional. Reckless perhaps, not intentional.

I don't think he was trying to hit Johnson in the face. But I don't think a flagrant 2 requires intent to hurt someone. It simply requires the ref to determine that the act was excessive. As they said at the time, the wind up was what made them deem it excessive.

As with most of these fouls, I could have seen them call it a flagrant 1. But a flagrant 2 was perfectly justifiably, given the standard.
