And we don’t need a closer. We need depth.
It could be argued that Doval is still a bit green.

I could see offering Jansen 2/25 or even 2/30, and make Doval the setup guy.

Better for us to sign him at 2/30 than not spend that money at all.

But I'd rather spend that elsewhere.

I don’t care about the money except in that it blocks us from spending it elsewhere. So that logic is sound. Sign him as a “tudor” for Doval and a 2-year contract won’t hurt.

Plus, it will be an added bonus to see the butt-hurt doggie fans having to see him in a Giants uni.

Although, in my utopian vision, I'd still love for us to bring back Bum but only under the condition that he would agree to be the closer. I'll bet Arizona would take a couple mid-level prospects in exchange for dumping his contract.

He's scheduled to make $23mm in 2023 and "only" $14mm in 2024, per BBRef.

He would bring some sorely needed leadership, though I'm not sure all of it would be good:

Can you seriously see Bum and Kap in the same locker room? I would fear for the integrity of the space-time continuum if they were to ever get too close to each other.

I read or heard something a while back that Rodon was not considering the Giants for next year because he had had enough of Kap’s schtick. I have no idea if that comment was accurate or just speculation, but I can see it. I know that if I were a ball player, and I were in Kap’s locker room, I would have a perpetual headache from the constant eye rolls I would be giving him.

Not sure why Jansen is being targeted by an FO that wants the team to get younger. Didn't he get pulled from the closer spot with the Braves toward the end of last season?

It would be like Clint Eastwood with the police captain in The Enforcer (adapted):

Kap: "You've been transferred to the bullpen."

Bum: "The bullpen?!? That's for assholes!"

He wouldn't be the closer. He'd set up Doval.

2/40 sounds about right.
$20mm a year for a 35 YO setup guy?

Please send me whatever it is you are smoking.

to be a tudor, he'd need to be Welsh.

and we'd need to put him on a peddle stool.

The younger movement won't be in the bullpen. Nor does it matter there.

you think that's not going to happen anyway.

It's the way it's going.
The max MLB payroll before the luxury tax hits in 2023 is $233mm.

I don't think we will spend better than 1/12th of that for a declining 35 YO 8th inning guy who will pitch 70 innings max.

That better not happen.

I'd rather we hire Jenny Finch for that money. At least there would be more entertainment value:

An update on the payroll with Pederson re-signed and Yaz, Alexander avoiding arb:
Guaranteed (9): $94.4M
Remaining arb estimates (8): $22.1M
Buyouts (Longo, McGee): $5.5M
————————————————
Total: $122.0M

Doesn't include pre-arb estimates for players like Doval, Bart.

BBRef has us at $131mm with Bart and Doval. So basically the same number, for brainstorming's sake.

Call it $100mm left in cap space.

$45mm for Judge.
$15mm for Jensen.

Leaves $40mm for two out three of: OF, SP, SS.

And I'm indifferent on Jensen. But I recognize that this is MLB Free Agency, not Autotrader.com. Not all that much to choose from when it comes down to it.

My two kroons.

I don't know if it is true but it seems as if free agent relievers bust more frequently than other positions in terms of big signings. The team could be better off signing low level guys and put the money elsewhere.

I certainly don't disagree. But if we are to position ourselves as contenders in 2023, we have to upgrade the bullpen. We just can't go status quo there.

That said, there just aren't that many quality options out there. It's not Autotrader where we get to input all the options we want: miles less than xxxx, cost less than $xxxx, # of cyls = x, etc.

Jensen would be a fairly known quantity at a somewhat steep but ultimately fair price.

It is a mistake to bring in a high priced closer to be a set up guy. Hard pass.
