Of course nobody knew what they were getting in Giannis.

I even implied that it would have taken a stroke of luck that would have only been possible if they traded “far enough down”.

You need to get off your high horse with BS. Nothing even remotely “absurd” about what I wrote.
Teams trading up to #1 in weak drafts and implying they can still get the guy they want at 5-6 as though it's a sure thing is, in fact, absurd.

It was a bad pick when they made it. They literally shocked the draft analysts because he wasn’t near enough to the top of the class in the eyes of most talent evaluators.

It is an even worse pick with the value of hindsight. When you make a pick like that, you best be right.

Yes, there are other, better choices the Cavs could have made there. Pretty much anything would have been better than using 1.1 on Bennett.

The best organizations use their assets in efficient ways.

Like when the Celtics had 1.1 and wanted Tatum.

But we’re able to trade down to 1.3 because they had Intel saying the 6ers and Lakers were going to take Fultz and Ball respectively.

Had the Cavs traded down to 5 or 6 and taken Bennet, it wouldn’t have been nearly as bad.

And yes, they could have made a move like that. No guarantee they get major pick value because it was a weak class, but they could have moved back.
No doubt it was an incredibly bad pick when it was made and Griff has owned it and taken the blame. But the idea you know someone trades up to 1 in a weak draft AND Bennett is there at 5-6 is no better than a guess. Many mocks and rankings had him in the top 4-5.

This draft was so much weaker at top than the Cs draft so add that to the absurd.

Noel was the clear 1-1 before he tore his acl, which Philly didn’t care about. They’d still end up with Noel
Ok, but he did tear his ACL and the Cavs cared. Noel was also a bad pick.

Bennet wasn’t projected in the top 5.

That is why it was such a terrible pick.

If he was in fact “their guy”, they needed to trade down like the Celtics did when they drafted Tatum.

And if somebody else had sniped Bennett?

Win/win.

Yes it was a weak draft.

Teams are always willing to trade up depending on the price tag.

Just obviously you aren’t getting nearly as much of a return in a weak class as you might if there were a couple studs at the top.

The only player thay was not grouped in as just top 5 was Oladipo, and he was still just viewed as top 3. There was no clear cut 1, and the draft was famously weak. Bennet was a headscratcher, but your hindsight take and imaginary trade back options are not real impressive here.

another absurd comment as guessing without hindsight (which is how teams draft) they don't consider it a win if they trade down and don't get the guy they want...

I was not even surprised when we took him at the time as had heard him being mentioned..... and he was a position of need (McLemore and Oldipo were not).

Bad pick and among the top busts ever? Yep.

BR had him as their top PF and had this to say ahead of the draft....

  1. Anthony Bennett, Freshman, UNLV
Bennett is a complete beast. He came into college with the body and game to excel right away, and he’s the most polished freshman big in the country. Bennett has great post moves, a surprisingly good jump shot with three-point range and very good ball handling skills for a big man. He’s a tremendous rebounder who uses his strength and length very well, and he takes every opportunity to thrown down a monster jam with his elite athleticism.
He passes effectively out of a double team. He sets great screens and understands how to clear out the lane for his teammates. He even makes his free throws.
Bennett played extremely hard at the beginning of the year, but later on he was pretty lazy on the defensive end. This could have been the result of playing on a selfish team, as you know he had to be getting frustrated when his playing hard was negated by the careless play of teammates. He also has asthma, and I'm not sure if that was affecting his effort or not.
His motor at times was concerning, and he made some questionable decisions, but that's how his team played, so maybe the culture will dictate his play. Foul trouble and an injury certainly played a part in some of it.
Since he showed great effort early in the year, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk any lazy play up to him being a freshman frustrated with his team or an injury. If you need a big man, he has to be a consideration. He's undersized, but I don't care. He has extreme length. Think Zach Randolph without all the early issues and much more athleticism. He's got a chance to be great, if he has the desire.
