Yup. Worst case scenario is we have a 3-level SP for portions of 2 seasons. Ceiling is we have a CY winner for 1 season.

I really do love this signing, as the Giants have money to spend and they absolutely should take chances on high upside players like Rodon. If it works out, it could help bring another WS trophy. But let's be honest, the floor is TJS a couple months from now.

I have never been a huge Joc fan. He is basically Nate Schierholtz. He will offer plus defense, but his HRs mask a really ineffective bat.

phuking antisemite.
I can appreciate the rif, but seriously, what does he bring us that we didn’t already have? We don’t need another defense first power hitting lefty in the OF. He is a clone of Yaz.

Give me Conforto. Give me Castellano. Give me Pham. Give me Myers.

He brings his immense Hebrewness, my friend.

And that is enough.

But doesn’t half his “Hebrewness” get chopped when he is just a day or so old?

The real question is whether Joc can perform as well as Alex Dickerson in awkward sandwich commercials.

At least we get rid of those super awkward “DICK DICK DICK” chants.

Now we can just go with “PEDO PEDO PEDO” chants…

Oh shit…

BAGEL commercials you mean.

Now you have me craving for lox. And no, I'm not Jewish. I have partaken of Jewish delights, though. I even dated a Jewish woman for years, but it didn't work out. Dated during college and a few years after college, but we both moved on.

My delayed thoughts on the guys the Giants have signed since the lockout ended.

Other than him being a beautiful Hebrew (which I realize, for some, that is sufficient) I'm trying to understand why the Giants felt the need to pick up Joc Pederson. Unless teams are allowed to carry more than 26 players to start the season, I cannot see the Giants carrying more than 5 outfielders. With Pederson in the fold, I would guess that the 5 will be: Pederson, Ruf, Wade, Yastrzemski and either Slater or Duggar. Duggar posted a .767 OPS last year, Slater a .744 OPS and Pederson a .732 OPS. Duggar and Pederson, both left handed batters, saw significant improvement from 2020 to 2021, while Slater, a righthanded batter saw a decline from 2020. Yes, I understand that Pederson had two nice years in a row (2018 and 2019) and another good season a few years before that (2016). Sure, he could bounce back but so could Slater and Duggar could continue to improve. Seemed unnecessary to sign Pederson, who seems a bit overrated at this point in his career.

And Jakob Junis' signing is just as much as puzzling. He's a failed started from the Royals whom the Giants signed as starting pitching depth? Couldn't that have been handled internally (former prospects who've failed at starting in the big leagues)? Now, I would guess that either Kervin Castro or Camilo Doval start the year in the minor leagues or Zack Littell gets jettisoned. For all the complaining some did about Littell's performance last year, he was much better than Junis.

Matthew Boyd is also puzzling. He's not done well in his time in the big leagues, and will miss at least 2 months to start the season. What do the Giants do if all 5 starters are healthy when he is ready to pitch? Start the phantom IL carousel? Most likely, there will be someone hurt among this group, so I hope that Boyd pitches well enough to at least earn the 5th spot but if Frisbee, Hjelle or, if still around, Beede look good at AAA I'd like one of them to get shots at a rotation spot.

I totally understand, however, the Carlos Rodon signing. The starting rotation was a bit thin and he did some good stuff this past year with the White Sox. And if he doesn't pan out, we are only stuck with him for two years. There was a clear need on the team and he's had recent success.

I also like signing Carlos Martinez to a minor league deal. His sketchy performance in the big leagues doesn't warrant a guaranteed salary but he could add depth if he performs well as AAA. I just hope that they don't stash him away all year in AAA if he stinks and keeps guys who are doing well in AA from being promoted.

It will be interesting to see how the AAA pitching staff shakes out. The Giants brought in a LOT of pitchers this offseason, more than they can stash at AAA and AA, unless they stifle the promotions that internal guys have earned from 2021. Of course, I don't know how many of these guys they've brought are healthy, so that will play a big part in the minor league rosters.

OF (4/5)

Yaz

Ruf

1 open spot

Slater (has option)
Duggar (out of options)

My estimations for spots leaves one additional spot to be filled. I doubt we carry 15 pitchers, so I would assume it will go to a position player (Dubon?).

The first fight appears to be Dubon vs Estrada, and that one doesn’t really look like a fight. Dubon’s only chance to stay with the org at this point appears to be if he clears waivers or is kept on the roster as the 28th man for a few weeks. Blandino and Krizan both look solid, but will almost certainly start in Sacto.

The next fight looks like Duggar vs Slater. Slater has an option, so Duggar would likely be sitting in the pole position.

Finally, assuming they are going with 14 pitchers, that leaves 3 bully spots open.

Junis signed an MLB contract as a FA, so he probably has the inside track to one of those jobs. He also fills the need of a swing man, so it makes sense.

Beede is out of options, but has looked like crap for a long time now. After today’s game, he may be done. He needed a strong spring to stay on the 40, I think.

Littell put up some nice numbers last year. While I don’t really think he is a LOCK, I think he is very close to being a lock. Especially given Beede’s game today.

Despite his horrible ‘21, Brebbia has a rather high ceiling. Problem is that he has an option. His option will work against his chances at the opening day roster.
