Kyrie wants a trade. He's looking to get back together with LeBron.
Think the Nets will take on Westbrook's $47.5M contract to give the Lakers a break?
They don't want to, but the market for Kyrie was already going to be a short list and with Kyrie actively trying to force himself to the Lakers, it looks to have basically whittled down the list to just the Lakers.
So for the Nets, it's about how petty/prideful they want to be. If they decide to just go ahead and deal with the Lakers, they will at least get 2 future firsts, maybe THT or someone if they want them and cap space. Because Kyrie makes less than Westbrook, they can also make the Lakers take on a contract that the Nets may want to unload.
They can also buy Kyrie out or just decide to pay him to stay home. But in those cases, they lose him for nothing. They could also make everyone wait until the deadline. Maybe somewhere along the way, some team decides to take flier on Kyrie and beat the Lakers offer or the Lakers can maybe find a 3rd to team to loop in (maybe someone looking for cap space for Westbrook) to get the Nets a little better deal.
Almost certain that they will make Kyrie and the Lakers wait until they deal with KD. The more they get for him, the less sending Kyrie to the Lakers will sting.
