Depends on their intent. Sure, you get the picks (and they need to recoup a lot of them between Kyrie and KD due to that Harden trade), but by buying him out, he still likely ends up with the Lakers, but they limit the Lakers' ability to extend him next season. Depends on how petty they want to be.
How do they limit his ability to extend with the Lakers?

So the Sixers are hard capped right now by virtue of the Tucker House and Queen signings. Can someone explain to me what that means going forward for them?
They can't add salary beyond that tax apron level of $155.7M. No midseason additions or trades that take on additional salary.

What happens when an NBA team is hard capped?
Hard salary caps forbid teams from going above the salary cap. Soft salary caps allow teams to go above the salary cap, but will subject such teams to reduced privileges in free agency. Teams that go above the luxury tax cap are subject to the luxury tax (a tax on every dollar spent over the luxury tax cap).

No bird rights, and he would be signing at league minimum. Only a minor raise (or an MLE) would be available to him if his new deal exceeds open cap space.

He signed with the Nets as a FA for more than a minor amount.

all this talk about generational talent, but seriously, if you are a superstar (loose term with some of the players getting max deals) these contracts mean nothing. They say the nets can get anything they ask for to trade durant, but what makes him actually commit to 4 years with his next team? What makes them confident that he is not demanding a trade in a season or two after you give up 4 first round picks and your top players.

If they buy him out, those Bird rights don't convey. You're right back in Monk territory with the salary limitations unless the extension next year fits under the cap.

No guarantees. That’s why teams stepping up want to be as sure as they can that KD is into it. Based on reports it seems like the only squads he is considering now are Heat and Suns. But half the league picked up the phone and made an offer.

After next season they only have AD and THT.

Yeah.....made a nice amount for a days work.

Couldn't have been much work to get that done really, foregone conclusions on these players. A lot of work done daily on other tasks though. Can be very lucrative if you can get those key clients.

Miami can't trade Bam so that limits what they can do.

Sure, but Lebron carries a cap hold of approx $50M too. If nobody else is on the books for 2023 (I think Jones got a two year deal, but that's minimal), so that puts the Lakers at about $105M in tied up cap space If they renounce all other free agents (and their applicable cap holds) towards 2023. Right now, 2023 cap is estimated at approx $130M, so they could pay Irving $25M max while having no recourse other than exceptions to retain any other of their free agents.

Y'all made some good moves, @fightinfunbags.

Harden needs to come back in better shape and hope the hammy isn't a chronic issue.
I was pleased for sure. Harris is likely another shoe to drop. I’m hoping it’s a Kings deal surrounded around Harrison Barnes. My ideal roster next year.
PG Harden
SG Maxey
SF Harrison Barnes
PF Tucker
C Embiid
Bench:
Melton Justin Holliday House Niang Rashaun Holmes

BBall Paul and Shake are deep bench that can back up the back ups at 4/5 and 1/2 respectively

I think Thybulle and Furkan Korkmaz are gone as well. Would like to see those guys used for 2nd round picks.
