I don't see how the list includes the Browns having just traded for Amari Cooper

It's rarely smart to sign Edge Rushers to huge contracts. That's an extremely limited list and more than likely due to injuries by many of the Edge Rushers

Kirk to the Jags. Lions reportedly really going after Allen Robinson, but he really does not fix the deep issue.
This is not the time to seek out a receiver like Allen Robinson. If Goff had proven himself as a qb who was willing and had the confidence to throw deeper down field and the entire defensive roster wasn't so depleted of talent, then I'd see the likelihood of signing him. That's not the case.
That was my conclusion as well. Thats why I went with Chark as the only possible one for us. Less expensive too. Still need to draft a number 1 though IMO.

Another kid I wanted to draft. I remember lots of folks poo-pooing that suggestion.

I cannot fathom Chark being considered, by you, as being inexpensive. If Kirk just received a 4-tear/72M with up to a max of 84M, then I can foresee the possibility that Chark is offered a 3-year 42M contract.

Any contract for another WR that exceeds 6M per year is excessive and completely wasteful, imo.

No one that I recall was poo-poohing Trey Hendrickson or TJ Watt.
Mayhew totally screwed us by drafting Jarrad Davis instead of Watt.
Reddick didn't do squat until his last year while at Arizona and then last year at Carolina.

LOL @ PFF.
I love how they can skew numbers to fit their needs by adding a known horrible season in 2020 when asked to play closer to the LOS

DETROIT LIONS

S Tracy Walker: Three years, $25 million ($17 million guaranteed)

If Walker’s PFF grading profile over the course of his NFL career was viewed in reverse, this contract would look likely be seen as a steal. After earning an 82.5 overall grade across his first two years in the league, that mark has fallen to 57.1 over the past two years. He’s been at his best in coverage when operating from deep alignments as the free safety. The worst season of his career came in 2020 when he was asked to play closer to the line of scrimmage.

With holes across the roster, Detroit opted to lock in one of its more productive defensive backs across the past several seasons. The team could still stand to add some more quality depth at safety in the coming weeks.

Grade: Average

TW lll overall grades
2018 89.8
2019 73.5
2020 51.0 (in a shitty system, mis-used schematically, and a worthless, idiot for a HC)
2021 65.1

2021
pass rush grade 58.1
coverage grade 64.2
run defense grade 66.4

meanwhile Marcus Williams overall grades
2017 89.2
2018 71.1
2019 88.2
2021 78.6
2022 80.1

2021
pass rush grade none
coverage grade 84.3
run defense grade 68.1

BTW, Jayron Kearse is an UFA.
I don't know if he fits the culture but..... He's a Strong Safety and I'm not sure if he's a fit having split safeties

pass rush grade 78.4 (5th/26 - S -)
coverage grade 75.5 (16th/93 - S -)

Lions sitting on approximately 21M in cap space, but they have yet to account for release of Trey Flowers - should be 10.4M or more if they use post-June 1st.

31.6M cap space to work with before you include below

Also, the signings of Alez Anzalone and TW lll have yet to be included.
Shaun Dion Hamilton and Jalen Elliot's contracts would pretty much be irrelevant at this time as they'd fall below the Top 51.

A heavy hit for TW lll cap hit in 2023, but they'll have an out in 2024 for 2.3M dead money.
Fuckin' kicking the can down the road.
Oh, but the cap space will be going up next year and years beyond. Right. Good business practice.
I don't want to hear how this year's cap hit is so inexpensive. Yes, it's because they don't have jack shit to spend.

Tracy Walker signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the Lions. $16.95 million is guaranteed, $16 million of which is fully guaranteed at signing.

This contract is fair even though I think Holmes and company were hanging out @broncosmitty crib over the weekend and came up with this idea. Nope, not blaming Smitty one bit. Having primo within one's grasp can lead to ill-advised decision making.

Alex Anzalone

Alex Anzalone signed a one year, $1.75 million contract with the Lions with $1.5 million of his salary guaranteed.

BTW

The CBA that the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed upon in the spring increased the size of practice squad rosters from 10 players to 12 players for 2020. (It will increase again to 14 in 2022).

The first group of practice squad players — rookies, players with fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season(s) and players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons — are paid on a fixed weekly salary that increases in each year of the current CBA.

Below are the fixed weekly salaries for most NFL practice squad players.

YearWeekly salary
2022$11,500

The second group basically consists of veterans; the NFL defines them as players with no limitations as to their number of earned accrued seasons. Teams in 2020 are allowed to keep up to six of these players on their 16-man practice squads.

These practice squad players receive a fixed weekly salary within the following minimum and maximum amounts over the duration of the current CBA.

YearMinimum weekly salaryMaximum weekly salary
2022$15,400$19,900

Practice squad player contracts do not provide for salary guarantees, bonuses, incentives or any compensation beyond the amounts above.

If a practice squad player is promoted to the active roster for a game, his weekly salary will be adjusted to 1/17 of the minimum annual salary for players with his number of accrued seasons.

Below are the players who are eligible to be added to practice squad rosters:

  • Players who do not have an accrued season of NFL experience (rookies)
  • Players who were on the active list for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season(s)
  • Up to four players per team who have earned no more than two accrued seasons (no game limitations)
  • Up to two (six in 2020) players per team with no limitations as to their number of earned accrued seasons
If a practice squad player is promoted to the active roster for a game, his weekly salary will be adjusted to 1/17 of the minimum annual salary for players with his number of accrued seasons.

Another new, pre-pandemic rule for 2020 as laid out by the CBA: Teams are allowed to promote one or two players from their practice squads to increase their rosters from 53 players to 55 players on game days. Any practice squad player promoted in such a way would revert to the practice squad roster after the game.

The current Collective Bargaining Agreement, which started in 2020 and runs through 2030, is designed to increase the minimum salary in the NFL each year. In the 2021 NFL season the minimum salary based on service years is as follows: $660,000 for rookies, $780,000 for one year of service, $850,000 for two years, $920,000 for three years, $990,000 for four to six years and $1.075 million for seven years or more.

Each year between now and through 2030, the minimum salary will increase by $45,000 in each of the same service time brackets stated above. Rookies in the 2022 NFL season will make a minimum salary of $705,000 while the top veteran bracket will make a minimum salary of $1.12 million.

Anyone notices the two re-occurring themes over the last three years? One is a normal yearly occurrence induced by poor business practices and the other is why the Lions have not been able to field a team with a roster that has been devoid of talented starters and depth players.
