Pretty rare that your last pick (in the 250's nonetheless) winds up being a guy that will probably make an impact on every game in front of us for at least the next few years. O'Donnell definitely wasn't bad. A bad punter can burn you. Hopefully he's ready for the next level because he's immediately our guy and is now the punter for the Chicago Bears.
I agree wholeheartedly. I've always felt STs don't get their fair share of love in the NFL and that usually goes double when it comes to drafting positions such as kicker, punter, and long snapper.
Generally speaking, more simply means more......heads will roll that is, including what is likely a few of these draftees and UFDAs. But we needed to add bodies, we needed to get younger, we needed to get faster, we needed to get meaner. I think Poles did a yeoman's job at accomplishing these tasks for the most part. It's a start, nothing more.
Ebner is a guy who should be able to make solid contributions early as well. Especially considering that a RB or two are almost guaranteed, at some point, to miss time. After this year, if he pans out, I don't mind him playing 2nd fiddle to Herbert in the backfield provided he does well (Monty almost certainly gone). He's capable of everything out of the backfield and can return kicks very well. A hair under 6 foot and a 4.43 speed guy.
Williams was a miss. However, outside of that? Really not a bad draft, at all. Pretty standard and par for the course, in fact. One pro bowler/all pro. Two guys in Bennett/Bowman who were regular contributors for 6 years each, started quite a bit, and made some big plays along the way. A good depth safety and solid SPT's contributor in Steltz. Then, Davis who certainly did a solid job in the red zone. However, never developed into a 1st string TE as hoped. But again... he was a 5th round pick and those are generally depth guys.
I stated in my B grade that what must be taken into account is when we drafted. Considering we had no 1st rounder and that 8 of our 11 picks were well past the top 150, I thought the draft went better than expected. Like other Bears fans, I would have liked to see a bit more aggression early on with the trenches. But then again unlike other Bears fans, I was glad he didn't heed the call for going heavy on the WR position.
