To save you all time - in this article, Flyers are 70-1 odds to win the Metro! Have to go recheck odds to win the Cup

Here’s the commentary:

The Philadelphia Flyers are considered the long shots to contend in the Metro, and rightfully so. Their roster is littered with holes. The forward group lacks both firepower and depth, and Philadelphia's three most expensive defenders - Ivan Provorov, Rasmus Ristolainen, and DeAngelo - all have legitimate shortcomings. Carter Hart faces a tall task trying to rebound behind such a poor lineup.
The Athletic picked us to be last in the Metro:

Philadelphia

Who’s new: Tony DeAngelo, Nicolas Deslauriers, Troy Groesnick.

Who’s gone: Claude Giroux, Oskar Lindblom, Keith Yandle, Martin Jones, Derick Brassard, Nate Thompson.

Reason for optimism: It really boils down to the potential impact of new head coach John Tortorella. General manager Chuck Fletcher has largely pinned his hopes on a rapid turnaround for the Flyers on Tortorella’s ability to get the most out of a roster that has missed the playoffs the past two seasons, and it’s certainly possible that Tortorella could pull it off.

The Flyers’ roster certainly isn’t devoid of talent, and Tortorella’s emphasis on structure and accountability has helped him to push other clubs of his (namely, his early teams with the Rangers and the post-Artemi Panarin Blue Jackets) to unexpected respectability. Last season, the players had completely lost faith in Alain Vigneault in the first half of the season, and interim head coach Mike Yeo simply didn’t come with the same kind of track record of success that Tortorella possesses. The stability and coaching chops that Tortorella brings to the table very well could put the Flyers back on the right track.

Reason for worry: In short, the Flyers’ roster just didn’t get all that much better this summer on paper, as compared to the group that finished with the fourth-worst record in the NHL in 2021-22. Tony DeAngelo is an upgrade over the four games that the team received from Ryan Ellis, sure. And the renewed health of Sean Couturier and Kevin Hayes will certainly boost them down the middle. But longtime star Claude Giroux is gone, and the 57 games of first-line caliber play that he provided the team last season won’t be easy to replace. Ellis seems unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, and could miss far more time than that.

Joel Farabee will probably be out for at least the early portion of 2022-23 due to offseason neck surgery. Oh, and they don’t have an established backup goalie behind Carter Hart — it could be a total disaster if he misses extended time. Much of the Flyers’ plan for improvement is based on the idea that better health and the impact of Tortorella will provide massive boosts. But Tortorella isn’t a miracle worker, and he’s being handed a club that lacks true high-end talent both up front and on the back end. If just a few things break against the Flyers, this team could find itself near the bottom of the NHL standings … again.

Bold prediction: Owen Tippett cracks the 20-goal mark. Given that Tippett was the centerpiece of the deal that sent Giroux, a franchise legend, out of Philadelphia, the Flyers are going to be highly motivated to prove that they were right to target the 2018 first-round pick, so he won’t be lacking for an opportunity. And during his 21-game stint with the Flyers after the trade deadline, Tippett was a scoring-chance machine (38 at five-on-five, tied for the team lead with Hayes) — the problem was an inability to finish on them. The guess here is that Tippett picks the corners a bit better this time around, combined with regular power play time and quality linemates, and starts to establish himself as a quality goal scorer at the NHL level.

The Flyers continue to wish upon a star as their all-in strategy for the coming season. It is a paper thin strategy and incredibly fragile. The Peter Principle could destroy this team early and the effects could last 3-5 years.

Ive been preaching the 3-5 years to fix this team theory for the last couple of years and got a lot of push back from this board. Now that its actually a reality its pretty disheartening.

We will get some of those picks back with a trade of Prov/Sanheim and JVR at the deadline.

Good news is the first round pick we gave up to Buffalo in the Risto trade wasn't in the 170 top players under 23 list.
Don't forget about the 3rd we will get for Braun at the deadline. He is the gift that keeps giving!

Boilermakers couldn’t close it out - another disappointing sports outcome.

I felt bad for you last night. As a sports fan that was a great ending to a game.
2nd tier teams (like my Boilers) just don't have enough talent to sustain an entire game against the elite schools that can trot out 20 players a side with no drop in talent. Purdue ran out of gas in the 4th.... 100 yds. in penalties didn't help either.

I was ready to bench Clifford for the rest of the season after that egregious pick six, but then he suddenly redeems himself with a minute to go. Idk where that late, clutch Penn State offense and defense was for the vast majority of the game. Gotta be more consistent.

This was one of those games that's probably painful to watch for both sides because of all of the sudden changes in fortune.

Vegas over under for Flyers points is 76.5. Fifth worst.

PSU could do better than expected. They have some good young talent.

Yeah, but also a big piece of that young talent is freshman QB Drew Allar. So, as long as Clifford has been with us, perhaps he's on a bit of a short leash because the youngster could quickly be much better.

5th worst in the entire league!? That's basically where we just finished with the 61 points...

I say no way we'll be THAT bad again. Not with the massive culture change that is coming.

76.5 should put us way better than 5th worst, but I'll take the over anyway.

Allar should be getting your starts, not a 6 year Sr QB who is not even that good. We actually tried swaying Allar to flip to OSU. He's an Ohio kid, but instead we flipped Devin Brown from USC. Cannot wait to play you guys this season.
