only 10 days until we see mistakes - rookie or veteran.
The real question might be playing time in preseason.
If Mac gets most of the snaps in preseason and doesn't look bad, do you give him the nod?
Cam is still new to Patriots game, should he not play more in preseason?
Hoyer gets some token time but other than that, how do you see BB dividing the QB time in actual preseason games?

Yes. There's no doubt there's a certain value in having a rookie QB sit behind a veteran for a year(see Patrick Mahomes) but if Cam is simply going to suck and make ugly decisions like last season then I think it's probably better to throw the kid in.

Watching Cam hold onto the ball last season for way too long and then run it up the gut for half a yard was even more painful than watching Matt P's bend but don't break(but it actually broke most of the time) defensive strategy and that was pretty painful to say the least.
I would prefer that Mac not ""learn"" bad habits that Cam has. If Cam can't throw as accurately or as quickly as Mac already does, then why have him as a mentor? Mac will never be the type of runner that Cam is so trying to teach him how to drop a shoulder to take on a 300 lb DEis useless info. At least Hoyer can teach him what to look for for quick recognition of what a defense is is set up for and how to avoid running a play into the grinder.

Questions I think we're all looking forward to seeing answered.

If BB has made up his mind that Cam is indeed the starter then I imagine he would need the higher percentage of snaps against the other teams starters since I think most of us agree he still doesn't seem to know the system all that well. Hike, survey the field for 8 seconds, run it up the gut for 1/2 a yard isn't a great system IMO.

I really really really hope Mac wins the starting gig so we can get on with it.

Only my guess.

Cam will get the start vs Washington. He's not new to the Patriots' offense and has a year experience behind him and should be very comfortable with pretty much the same OL. He will get all of the first half snaps unless he really screws the pooch. I think Mac will get the starts after halftime unless the game is tight and Bill is looking to see if Cam can do something other than take off running. Then again, if Cam goes out on the field and has several three and outs, Bill will put the kid and see how he handles it.

If the Patriots are in that KC 24-0 at the half shit show, I hope he doesn't expect Mac to come in and suddenly go 15 for 15 with four TDs like Stdham was expected to do last year. Leave Mac out and let Hoyer mop up the mess and hopefully clean up the kitchen by Saturday night.

A rookie does make rookie mistakes, but was Cam's mistakes "rookie level" since it was his first here? Assuming they are not, wouldn't it be better to get the rookie mistakes out of the way instead of living with the Cam mistakes longer?
No way, it takes more then a rookie season to perfect the ground ball throw. Or the 10 yard airmail pass.

Yes, but what would not be good would be a rookie mistake that ended up with injuries or a QB that can't shake ghosts because of how many hard sacks he took while learning from those rookie mistakes.

Well, Cam is not his throwing coach, I doubt Mac would go to Cam for advice on his mechanics.

Practicing in miserable weather will benefit the team when the games are real. Rain and cold and wind in week one and next week the heat is supposed to move in for a few days.

From what I can see, Mac is starting to get more reps with the starters and he's taking advantage of it. Cam had 8 reps with the starters in 11 on 11 and badly missed four passes. According to me, it wasn't the weather, it was Cam just plain missing the mark. Mac had 16 reps in the 11 on 11 and hit 12 and two of the misses were drops.

Again, my opinion. Mac appears to be getting more and more confident and much more comfortable. The 'team' also appears to play with much more enthusiasm when Mac's under center.

I also think that Cam believes he'll be starting and that he isn't reaching. I don't believe that Josh or BB are missing one bit of it either. If Cam doesn't see himself as falling behind when he's only getting half as many reps, then he's not going to be around come September. BB doesn't like stupid players.

Lot of judgement calls there Ken. I agree with mot of it.
Mac got a lot more reps and much better results - although stil a lot of slopiness all around.
Mac got a lot of rainy day practice and it seems Pats are prepping him to play. That should worry Cam but not outwardly.
Biggest deal of day 8? Mac dhowing some consistency we have been asking for.

I have tried and tried to like Cam and I will say that I do enjoy his press conferences and think he comes off as a very decent human being but deep in my heart I believe when the gloves come off in a brawl Cam ducks and runs. He just doesn't seem to have that "win at all cost" DNA. I hope Mac does.

This is nothing more than personal opinion based on gut feeling and very little real info to back it up but I just believe the team will be more likely to follow Mac into battle.

I'm not sure that he ducks and runs but I am sure that he doesn't get into any of it. His hat might get permanently bent and more than likely, so would his ego.

On 2nd thought, saying Harry might do enough to take Jakobi Meyers place on this team should have qualified for Stupd News!

"Leading to the question, why is the undrafted guy creating more separation and providing more of a threat than the former first-rounder?

It simply comes down to route running and Harry’s inability to do it. Former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria, who spent 13 years in the league, said that Harry was the ‘worst route-runner in the history of the world.’

Some interesting facts:

Since Tuesday 8/2 Cam has taken 40 snaps with the first team offense. Mac Jones snaps have increased daily Mac has taken 84.

Cam takes almost four seconds to complete his WR reads from 1 to 3. Mac takes two seconds.

Cam is taking nearly six seconds to release a pass and is throwing to where the WR is at that time making the throw slightly behind the receiver or missing the WR totally. Josh keeps telling him that he cannot be relying on his legs every time he drops back because a 30 yard completion on third and 4 is much better than a three yard gain.

Mac is releasing mostly on his first read and is getting the ball off in two to three seconds and continuously leads his WR. If he reads all three, the ball is out in three seconds.

Josh was quoted as saying, "We're loading Mac like a mule and he's carrying that load."

There are three NFL officials at every practice. False start and you run a lap. People say that the Patriots get preferential treatment, but there is a discipline lesson at every practice and it's the officials who are assisting the staff in creating that discipline. Same for off sides on defense.

Patriots have their first preseason game this Thursday against the Washington Football Team.

Next week the Patriots will be practicing in Philadelphia with the Eagles before playing them on Thursday Aug. 19.
