I disagree TJF12. I think Pelinka and company are trying to gather cap space in a creative approach as it is going to decrease in the next cap cycle and I think Pelinka really wants to remove this albatross that continues to hang around the Lakers neck for a guy that played all of what 3 games. I also think, the Lakers are using their Championship clout to see if Silverman will budge and consider dismissing the remainder of their obligation. I am pretty sure Pelinka and to some extent Jeannie Buss, don't give a damn what Gilbert and Cuban think.

I know why they're doing it and I like that they are trying. You don't know if you don't ask. I just think that the best they can hope for is the league allowing them to defer the cap hold for a season or 2 because of the unique situation. I doubt they'll even allow that. I just think it's more likely than them just canceling it.

It doesn't matter if Pelinka or Jeanie give a damn what Gilbert or Cuban think. The league would at least listen. Just like they did when the Lakers tried to trade for CP3. I'm not saying their crying made the difference in that trade being vetoed or not, but they darn sure didn't help.

I hope you're right. I'd love to be wrong. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Meh, doubt they get it. Maybe the league will let them defer it for a couple of seasons. But I'd be surprised if the league just cancels it. That would likely trigger more angry letters from Dan Gilbert and Mark Cuban crying about how "it's not fair".

I don't see how it can be granted. If they do, they basically open up a can of worms where teams will be doing all sorts of things to abuse the rule. It's a "career ending injury" exception. But Deng actually played games after said "injury", even for other teams. They'd basically be ignoring what the actual purpose of the exception is for if they grant it.

mid Thibs And jimmy butler couldn’t get him to play D, I doubt anyone could

Disagree.

Thibs never really seemed to earn the trust of the locker room there and Butler clearly didn’t get along with Wiggins.

Totally different culture in GS and a totally different role for Wiggins. If he doesn’t adapt, his next contract will be a mid level type deal. And I think he knows this.

Please stop bringing up CP3.

Owners complained because the NBA literally was running the Pelicans and made a crappy trade that clearly benefitted the Lakers while hurting the Pelicans.

Every owner in the league had a right to complain about that.

0% chance Stern vetoes that deal if the Pelicans were being run by a normal GM/owner. Trades like that happen every single year.

This is not the same thing at all. I am not even sure other owners would complain.

I disagree and no I'm not going to quit bringing up CP3. The league had no business stepping in. They had put someone in charge of running the that team and had no business stepping in. The only reason Stern did was because they were looking for an owner and CP3 was a star player.

The deal that Stern ultimately approved, was actually worse for the Hornets than the original deal with the Lakers, which was a 3 team deal involving the Rockets.

And as you said, 0% chance that Stern vetoes it if the league didn't own the Hornets, so he shouldn't have vetoed with the league owning the either.

Sounds like the Lakers have interest in Drose which isn’t surprising since they were looking to get him at the deadline last year. I bet Rondo and DRose could play on the floor together but that is interesting to think about

He's a free agent, so we're talking MLE at most, and potentially a vet min contract.

Yeah and Rose has been pretty efficient the last two years. He would be a very nice option

I like Rose. If healthy the guy would be a very good add for a lot of teams around the league. Be interesting to see where he ends up.

The league had no business running Hornets. That was the problem. Should have never happened. Was a huge conflict of interest.

A team with a blank canvas of 2 lottery picks and a talented young prospect (Eric Gordon) is a lot more appealing to potential buyers than a group of vets likely to deliver 40 wins. And yes, part of the appeal was bottoming out and getting in position to win the lottery and draft Anthony Davis.

Stern should have never been in the position where he was forced to veto the deal to protect the sale value of the franchise his office was controlling. But make no mistake, taking the Clipper deal made the Pelicans much more attractive to buyers.

And there is no reason to bring it up here because that was a totally unprecedented set of circumstances that almost surely will never happen again. And had a similar deal been made with a different contender, it would have been vetoed also.

they also gave Demps full authority to make a deal and set up the chinese wall so the league wasn't involved...and then pulled this. Just made it worse.

What is missed is that Martin and Odom and probably scolal all could've been shipped out for firsts, plus the first and second they already got. PLUS Demps had the forsight to land Dragic.

Makes it look a lot different. But would've taken some extra work.

But they wasted the picks they got anyways. Soooooo they were probably screwed no matter what lol

Agree 100%.

Agree to a point. I had forgotten what the original offer was. According to this article it was:

Hornets get Goran Dragic, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and the Knicks 2012 first round pick.

Lakers get Chris Paul

Rockets get Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom

In 2011, Dragic was also a talented young prospect, Luis Scola was a very good player averaging 18.3 points in 2010-11, was a 20+ point a game player and the New York pick was #16.

The pick the Hornets got was #10.

In short, there was nothing wrong with the original offer. They got better quality vets in the original trade and those vets could have been traded for more picks and bad contracts if they wanted to tank for AD.

Stern should have never been in the position where he was forced to veto the deal to protect the sale value of the franchise his office was controlling. But make no mistake, taking the Clipper deal made the Pelicans much more attractive to buyers.

Agree Stern never should have been in that position. Disagree the Clippers deal was more attractive.

There is reason to bring it up and really don't care what your opinion is on it. I only mentioned it because if the league allowed, owners would bitch.

It's also hilarious that you think owners were right to bitch about a perfectly fair trade. They should have been bitching about Stern and his conflict of interest.

This could be interesting. It's basically rumors from unnamed agents (which the article states), but if it's true...

Owners were in position to bitch about it because the league controlled the team and the conflict of interest existed in the first place.

Hopefully that never happens again. Because it is a travesty.

Agree 100%. I completely understand the league taking over the franchise, they kind of had to. But they should have been "hands off" once they appointed a GM. Especially since, if memory serves, that's pretty much what Stern said they'd do.

Overall, I thought Stern was a very good commissioner. But he also had an ego as big as any player or coach and in this case, it did not serve him well.

They did...until it didn't suit their interests. Every team was told Demps had authority to make the deal.

Stern was trash. A black eye on the sport and just a guy who was lucky to be there when Al Gore invented the internet.
