Report: 49ers, Arik Armstead agree to massive contract

Wow, good that he remains since the D-line is the key to our success. But now this places big pressure on our cap to extend Buckner OR Kittle? I really think they need to extend one now else BOTH enter free agency next off season.

With this deal in place, IMO we extend Buckner.

This is the reason we TRY to retain players who can apply pressure, almost every opponent has a good QB and WR. So the best defense against everyone else is pressure.

This is also a great example of why the draft is critical. Soloman Thomas was targetted for Armstead's role and if he had panned out, we wouldn't need to spend $85M on Armstead. Armstead's new cap space would've gone to Buckner or Kittle.

DJ Jones and Thomas, Day get more playing time! WR at 13 then CB or S !!

Jones doesn't play the 3-tech? Day does but he's also a FA.

Yes, the 13th spots brings a whole options to the table. The 13th pick might be too low for Kinlaw, but i'd think he's now a target too?

or the 13th pick could generate more quality draft picks in a trade down? Not saying lets trade down, just mentioning a possible option.

I would think we'll try to extend Kittle first, but not expecting a deal to happen.

If not, Lynch can now look at Ward, Sanders, and all these "depth" guys like Day, Blair, etc.

Sometimes they move Armstead inside, Bosa inside, Blair and Ford outside..need to look at practice squid too!! Lose a Buckner need to improve in 2 areas!

Generally, Armstead is outside and Jones is inside. On passing downs, Jones exits and Armstead moves into his inside spot. Then Ford comes in at Armstead's outside spot. I would think this remains the same next season...generally.

I'm ok drafting a top DT at 13th, one who plays the run AND can pressure too. But if not, we'll need a 3-tech later in the draft. We won't get a stud 3-tech 'later in the draft', but at least be a good run stopper.

$21 million a year for Buckner after 17 a year for Armstead! Good move I was looking for a player or another pick as well!?! Joseph from Vikings is a large DT with Burst!! Lets see what that takes, we need picks!!:)

If we want to fill the crown maybe the Auburn DT Derrick Brown falls to 13.?

yep, he and Kinlaw are the top DT's. I'd be more than fine with one of these guys at 13th, but we're right at the pick where these two are likely gone?

I LIKE keeping our defense strong and it starts on the line. Whether defending the run OR pass, it starts on the line.

It's a little shocking to trade Buckner but with the resigning of Armstead it makes more sense. I'm guessing they draft a DT early with one of those two first round picks.

IF by chance Brown or Kinlaw falls to 13th, it'll make sense to take a DT there.

But then again, i am assuming these two guys are suited for the 3T as we run it? They may or may not be for all we know? Whereas for example, a WR might be absolutely suited for Shannahan?

Well I'm not against taking one of the WR's and a DT later. I think the depth of the class is at WR and a really good one could be available at 31.

All value being equal i'd take a DT right now, just saying I may be assuming too much?

In the bigger picture, we need to walk away with the most talent we can, and i get what you're saying on WR. This is what we do in fantasy football, we slide the strongest position.

the below hits home the point we couldn't fit Buckner in next season's cap. More so with Kittle, etal to sign too. Too bad we don't have Buckner this season but getting a comp pick for 2022 pales in comparison to the 13th. It a good thing the Colts were desparate AND had the cap space.

The deal includes $56.378 guaranteed for injury, with $39.378 million fully guaranteed. The new-money average on the four-year, $84 million extension is $21 million.

Adding in the $12.378 million that Buckner was due to earn in 2020, the five-year contract has a $19.2 million average at signing.

The new-money average trails Aaron Donald‘s by $1.5 million per year, but Donald signed a six-year extension. Buckner’s extension covers only four seasons. And the Colts had to surrender a first-round pick to get Buckner; without that draft-pick compensation, the Colts presumably would have paid Buckner even more.

The way the offense is set is to run people over!, screens, mismatch dl or s covering RB or WR or TE gives Jimmy G 1 more option!! or throw it away!!We will see what Dwelly, Liofolotula sp. and Hurd can or cant do.
