Pretty sure they knew Lebron was gone which was why the Cavs had to trade Kyrie...they didn't want Lebron's last year here to be dragged down by a kook (who needed an eventual knee surgery).

so at that point it was pretty clear- if LeBron was not willing to sign up for a team of him, Irving and George for another couple seasons then he was gone no matter what.

Exactly. So the key to the deal for them was the Brooklyn pick (though they probably hoped it would be higher than 8). Imagine if they made a deal for just players and Lebron left. Maybe the players make them a little better last season, but they'd have had no draft pick to help start the rebuild.

I like what the Hawks did, flipping all their picks for a better pick at #4 while still keeping #10. They should be able to get Hunter and potentially another useful player.

Who knows with NO and all those picks. Most of this draft is an utter crapshoot past #4 so maybe it pays off, maybe they all bust, or maybe they can still package a bunch for something else.

One other thing to keep an eye on, it'll be interesting to see if this deal is folded into the Lakers deal with LA sending out additional players to get the 30 mil in cap space they want.

D'Lo seems to make sense as a target for them, but they've also been a very bad franchise for years. Maybe the friendship will be enough to make him overlook that.
