God damn, I’m on an island for sure but I love Heredia and still firmly believe he is a MLB starter and is a 4 tool player. Granted the BA is a crucial part of the 5 tools.

I loved him as a 4th OF. Played hard and with energy.

I’d still take him over Mallex Smith though.

The way Smith played last season he should be a 4th OF. And if that is the real Smith, then I would take Heredia over him as well...but still as a 4th OF. But since this is the Mariners, him as a starter wouldn't hurt. We would still finish on the bottom.

Marlins released OF Brayan Hernandez.
Hernandez was once a big-time international prospect, but the 22-year-old native of Rio Chico, Venezuela slashed just .159/.196/.265 in 166 plate appearances last season between a couple Low-A affiliates of the Marlins. It's unclear what the future holds for the young outfielder.

Mariners former #6 Prospect traded in Phelps deal with Marlins.

Braves signed OF Marcell Ozuna to a one-year, $18 million contract.
ESPN's Jeff Passan was first to pass along word of the agreement and now it has been confirmed via an official team press release. It's rather surprising that Ozuna had to settle for a one-year contract -- the value of this deal comes in just above the one-year, $17.8 million qualifying offer he rejected from the Cardinals back in November -- but he fits very nicely for a Braves team that just lost 2019 cleanup man Josh Donaldson to the Twins. Ozuna should carry tremendous fantasy appeal in Atlanta batting behind the likes of Ronald Acuna, Ozzie Albies, and Freddie Freeman.

Ex-Mariner alert:

Mets signed RHP Rob Whalen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Whalen announced his retirement from baseball last February, citing his battle with depression and anxiety as the reasons. However, he's evidently decided to dust off his cleats and glove and give it another shot. Whalen, who turns 26 later this week, was originally drafted by the Mets.

Good deal:

Cubs signed OF Steven Souza to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The deal, which was originally agreed upon last week and has now been made official, includes $1 million in non-IL roster bonuses and another $1 million available in performance-bases incentives. Souza sat out the entire 2019 season after tearing multiple ligaments in his left knee in a March exhibition game and also had an injury-marred 2018 in Arizona, but he put up an .810 OPS with 30 home runs and 16 stolen bases over 148 games with the Rays back in 2017. The 30-year-old outfielder is a low-risk, high-reward type of bargain grab for Chicago and he should get regular starts out of the gate against left-handed opponents.

Red Sox re-signed 1B Mitch Moreland to a one-year, $2.5 million contract with a $3 million club option for 2021.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first to pass along word of the agreement. Moreland posted a respectable .835 OPS with 19 home runs and 58 RBI in 91 games last year for Boston and always seemed destined to return for 2020, though it did take close to three months for the two parties to ultimately work out a deal. The veteran left-handed hitter will presumably reprise his role as a platoon option at first base this season. Michael Chavis figures to be the other half of that platoon, though he'll see some action at other positions too.
