Lol what are you talking about committed earlier? He was on his rookie deal the first time around in Cle. I think we all know that he left the first time because he couldn't get anyone to go to Cle.
we don't all know it because, in fact, Lebron did commit after his rookie deal. But he took a shorter deal than a max for deal #2 and never showed any signs he would stay, thus, making it harder to lure FAs.

Notice when he committed in 2014 they could more easily bring guys in? Like that love fellow who asked to be moved here and resigned?

You are 100% right.

Curry's draft workout moves had to play a role here too.

From the Minnesota point of view, they clearly had doubts about what kind of pro he would be and they opted for the player who wanted to be there over the guy who didn't.

It was obviously a horrendous choice, but I do understand why they made it.
I agree with this logic. with hindsight, sure, a disaster, but no one thought Curry would be Curry.

I also understood the cavs drafting Bennett. Not enamoured with any of the top choices based on either skill or fit (or both). They opted for the guy with the most upside.

Might be the #1 bust, but at least they didn't pass on a Curry type to take him. so we've got that going for us.

He was only "committed" for 1 year though.

The assumption that Love and everyone else was working under was that he would extend at least a couple more times. But it wasn't a long term commitment.

Curry's mother didn't think Curry would be Curry.

I followed him pretty damn close. Met him when he was in high school and followed his games every year at Davidson. I thought he could be a good pro, but a superstar? Hell no.

Apparently Don Nelson had it pegged closest.

So he wasn't 100% right, lol.

Hard to say he still wasn't 100% right. No one in their right mind would have passed on Blake Griffin in that draft. And he's lived up to the expectation of a #1 pick. 6x Allstar, 4x All NBA among a lot of injury plagued seasons.

correct, but after the SI story no one thought Lebron was going anywhere. The 1 year deals were not just for flexibility from him. At that time they were to max out earnings.

Coming from a fan of a team that put all their eggs in the Kawhi basket, who could bolt this summer? Better get to the finals...

But look at their record and a #2 seed. If they get deep in the playoffs then I wouldn't be surprised if Kawhi stays...I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Agreed. 0% chance of him leaving again right away.

But also made good leverage for LBJ to make Gilbert do what he wanted.

Yeah I don't think many thought Curry would be very good player, let alone great, maybe like make the AS team a couple times and a very good long career but not anything close to this. I really don't think anyone thought Flynn was going to do much of anything either though. Curry just outplayed in him college.

Griffin was a #1 pick no matter what in that draft.

I don't blame him for playing it that way. But his final deal was only 1 year less than his current deal. 2 years with an option.

Gilbert did everything the guy asked, which is why I think he just wanted LA....which is his right.,

There should be a spot for Sexton on the All-Rookie 1ST team:

Before the Spurs game last night among rookies--- Sexton is 1st in double-digit scoring games (66), 1st in FT% (83.9%), 2nd in 3FG% (41.3%), 3rd in PPG (16.3), 3rd in games with 20+ PTS (23)

1st Team ALL-Rookie Team
Luka Doncic
Trae Young
Colin Sexton
DeAndre Ayton
Marvin Bagley

do they have "rules" on voting? Meaning, can voters just vote for any 5 or do they need to have, say, 2 G, 2 F and a C

If no rules I agree with yours....though I guess they could make Doncic a F if need be

I was thinking the same thing but it looks like past all rookie teams weren't listed out by position. I think you could put Donic at F or G but technically he is listed as SG...

G - Young
G - Sexton
F - Doncic
F - Bagley
C - Ayton

Big game for the Celtics tonight. Is Kyrie playing or did he sprain his ego? Nuggets are on the tube & so is March Madness. Sure wish I was sitting in a Vegas sportsbook tonight.

Yeah. I always hated those "rules".

They might have made sense in 1980, but I still never liked them. The best 5 players should get first team all rookie regardless of position. Just like the best 5 players should start in the all star game.

If you have 4 guards going against 3 big men, so what? It is an exhibition and those crazy matchups can be fun sometimes. In the modern era it makes even less sense to award first team honors based on position, IMO.
