Can't agree here. Do you honestly think that if Phil Jackson couldn't get Kobe or MJ to rest...that Tyronne Lue is going to tell Lebron he can't play? KD, Curry, etc. are going to listen to Kerr?

These coaches, with the exception of Pop, are providing cover for these guys.
It was Popovich that started the trend though. The players never complained

I'm not. As I mentioned in my last post, it lengthens a season that some are beginning to say is already too long. Obviously, I'm still gonna watch because I love the sport. But these guys really need to quit being such sissies and just play ball.
I'm okay with the season being so long but If each played each other team 2 games. IT would be enough

The guys can play and that's a fact, but that doesn't mean it's the best approach or decision. My approach is that when the Lakers have played a game and it's 10 or 11 pm then let them go home and have a decent nights rest. Just because they did something wrong for 50 years does not mean they need to continue doing it wrong

You act like the circumstances are the same now as they were back then.

Just because something was done a certain way for a long time and someone decided it was wrong, doesn't mean it was wrong.

As I've pointed out, these players play under far better conditions than players in the past. The travel on private jets, stay in the best hotels, have training and supplements that guys in the past couldn't even dream of because they didn't exist and even the end of the bench guys have make enough that they don't have to have jobs in the off season like many players in the past did.

MJ complained and so did Kobe. Even Phil couldn't keep them out of games if they wanted to play.

You can blame Pop all you want. Bottom line is that it got to where it is because the players accepted and embraced it.

Doesn't mean it was right either. It's about protecting the players more and improving the games. Mission hopefully accomplished. I have never liked 4 games in five nights or the b2b

The players will always bitch about something. This is about the games which are bigger than the players so let them whine

Protecting players from what? Getting tired? They are arguably the best conditioned athletes in the world. They are asked to play occasional back to backs. They already had fewer back to backs than at any time in the leagues history.

You are also ignoring the fact of the travel luxuries, having 4 months off per year and training advancements that today's players enjoy. Sorry, but there is no reason they can't play 2 nights in a row.

I wonder what my boss would say if I said "I'm just too tired to come in to work 2 days in a row. I'm gonna need to work every other day and have 4 months of vacation every year"?

This isn't a combat sport like football, boxing, MMA or even ice hockey. These guys don't take the physical pounding that those players do.

I hope Portland manages to keep Mo Harkless with these Carmelo rumors ( doubt it though ). Whose gonna play defense on that team besides Nurk, Aminu and McCollum... Smells like a 1st round exit to me.

Just glanced at an article about the most intriguing players this season. It lists:

Rodney Hood
Jusuf Nurkic
Noel/Nowitzki/Barnes
Justise Winslow
Andre Drummond
Jrue Holiday

So "intriguing."

Can we just start the season already?

It's a basic concept taught by trainers. After an extensive work out - the professionals say it takes 72 hours for your muscles to recover. The NBA is an extremely physical work out. Now if the Lakers played the Kings in Sacramento on Monday Night, then drove over to Golden State the Next night - I would agree that is no big deal but when the Lakers for example had to play Dallas on Monday night, gets finished at 10 p.m. have to load up on the plane and gets to Denver at 2 or 3 am and then play the Thuggets with little rest or time to acclimate to the altitude - I think that is ridiculous. I like the idea of them playing every other night at the most and I don't have have a problem with four games in seven nights, but the 4 games in 5 nights was always ridiculous to me.

I have even learned that when I can sleep laying down because I got greedy and ate at 11 pm that sleeping in the chair is not the same. The body needs the proper rest and the body is going to feel better when it gets that. Yes they are professionals and yes they have been doing it that way before I was born, but it does not change the fact that the players will be better rested, play better and there will less risk of an injury because a player is pushing his body just a bit to much. The players that will benefit the most from this new rule are the ones made out of glass and are fragile. The rest of them will most likely cruise the town looking for women and continue to punish their body.

By the way - I agree that players can play two nights in a row - but the before Kobe retired, the Lakers also lost most of those games. One year they lost everyone in the season. I did the stats one year and most teams lost the over-whelming majority of their 2ND OF THEIR B2B games. So the question is do you want to see the Lakers play a game in Denver knowing they will be too tired to be competitive and lose or would you prefer to see them Play on a Monday, fly to Denver the next day, get a good nights rest and have a meeting to prepare of the next game on Wednesday and give you a competitive and fun game - knowing they will at least have a chance to win. That was just an example , but if in your mind the only chance the Suns has to beat the Warriors is getting the Warriors on a b2b, I understand that mentality even though I don't share it. I like the idea of players being rested.

I was in landscaping for 13 years man - and sometimes worked 7 days a week in order to pay the note on my house and didn't get the luxury of a day off, but I at least had a good nights rest and was recovered the next morning. These players don't get even that much because of the traveling and that's the problem.

You do realize these guys get paid tens of MILLIONS of dollars, right?

"Poor players. Let's them get some rest".

Get the fuck outta here

From a fan perspective, I just want to see the best players on the court as much as possible. If that means more rest days in between games, so be it.

There is no question that the players can play 4 games in 5 nights, but the fact remains that if you want to see better games without a bunch of silly turnovers, bad passing and missed shots that clearly indicates a tired player, then a simple nights rest makes good sense. I personally prefer to see players at their best. I guess some people don't want that

So a 22 year old, who is at the peak of his physical prowess, earns tens of millions of dollars a year, gets to travel in luxury private jets and gets to stay in five star hotels....

needs to be wrapped up in cotton wool in case the poor guy can't handle playing 40 minutes two days in a row?

I guess the simple answer is that I don't care. Whatever the schedule is, I'd like to see the best guys on the court performing at the highest level possible. If that means extra days of rest, fine. I just don't care that much.

Although I guess I should note that the schedule changes, in theory, should help the 76ers. Embiid is not a great candidate to play back-to-backs because of his injury history. I'll take the extra rest days if it means more games played by Embiid.

I'm not questioning your perspective as a fan. I'm questioning how guys were doing it in the 70s, 80s and 90s in worse conditions with only a small percentage of what players get paid nowadays.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I never heard guys like Kareem, Magic, MJ or even Kobe complain.
