Because Melo is a bad contract. He has little to no trade value. The Knicks can't seriously hope to get anything but bad contracts in return.
Hard to say he has little to no trade value if both the Cavs and Rockets, both contenders, are after him. In this day and age, his $25M salary isn't that out of line (not far from what worn-out Wade is getting) and that contract is potentially expiring as he can opt out next year (if still playing well of course, or if he wants to move on).
He averaged 23/6 last year, not far off from his career averages of 25/7. His FG% was down a little, but his 3% was up over his career average. He's just not a lead player at this point, but can be the #2 or #3 option on a super team quite well, depending on system fit.
The Knicks should be expecting draft picks along with any undesirable contracts if those are indeed included.
With a new GM now in place, they will have to go through everything again to get everyone on the same page before any trade discussions resume.
