Pre-cap I would agree with you. But you can certainly have too many D-men when they all come looking for paychecks. You have to allocate appropriate funds to all the position groups or you'll end up with trouble in one area of the game.

To me the Flames needed another scorer, or a franchise goalie, more than they needed a defenseman (albeit one of the best young ones in the game).

Draft and accumulate the best players regardless of position and then trade for need - that's the way you do it

Also, thanks to Sven Baertschi for going public about not wanting to re-sign with Calgary and thanks to Jim Benning for sending a 2nd round pick in the trade for Sven. I'm going to think that 2nd round pick helped the Flames land Dougie Hamilton today.
