Rangers' Fielder working on timing coming off neck surgery

Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder, who is expected to make his spring debut Wednesday, appears to be doing well coming off neck surgery.

"Good … everything is smooth," Fielder said, per MLB.com. "My legs are not sore so it's all good."

The Rangers are watching Fielder's swing closely as he is facing live pitching for the first time in 9 1/2 months.

"He's doing OK," hitting coach Dave Magadan said, "He's a typical veteran player who is just trying to get his timing. We are trying to solidify some of the stuff we talked about in the offseason. Last year he was crashing into the ball, now we're getting him to hold his ground. Timing is huge. With him it's going as well as expected. Once he gets into the flow of games and gets his timing down, everybody will see a big difference.

"The goal is to hold your ground and get the ball into the air on the pull side. When he does that, it means he is going good."

Be nice to see Prince get back to being his old self. Im still on the fence on Magadan, but we shall see
For mags sake I hope it's mostly younger guys going forward. Hard to work with stubborn Kinsler types that don't wanna listen to a word you have to say.

Same here on Magadan but will give him a chance with a new manager and approach to hitting where we are not always taking the bat out of the players hands.

The pitchers for Wednesday’s exhibition opener against Kansas City: RHP Colby Lewis, RHP Lisalverto Bonilla, RHP Yovani Gallardo, RHP Alex Gonzalez and LHP Martire Garcia. The first four will each pitch two innings. On Thursday, RHP Yu Darvish starts and will be followed by RHP Alec Asher, RHP Keone Kela, RHP Roman Mendez and RHP Spencer Patton. … The Rangers will give LHP Martin Perez (recovering from Tommy John surgery) four days off from throwing this week before he advances to making some pitches off a half-height mound. The break was planned; there has been no setback.

Maybe for the same reason Elvis may return to form in the 2 hole finding the gaps again instead of the bunt.

I think Magadan will be gone once his contract is up. They seemed to want him to leave a few months ago.

I liked what I saw from him for the most part last year.

If i remember correctly he gave up a couple HR's early on in the season that led to a bloated ERA and then settled in later in the season and ended up having a pretty decent season

They let him look for another job. Once he couldn't find one they let him stay.

My memory of this was a team - don't remember which one - asked the Rangers for permission to interview him, which was granted. He wasn't offered the position and the Rangers brought him back.

Frankly, if the Rangers didn't want him, he wouldn't be here.

That's an interesting thought.

I'm trying to keep an open mind re: the entire coaching staff now that we've got a new man at the helm.

Have been my thoughts exactly a few times on this board. It will be one of the interesting things to watch this year.

I am so ready for baseball to start. It is by far my favorite sport. For so many years I had to listen to many in the state of Texas tell me how boring baseball is. More so in the upper half of Texas where the Cowboys were IT. One thing that really helped get people to pay attention and try and understand that there is more to the game than a guy just throwing a ball and another guy trying to hit it was the Rangers making it to 2 WS.

I've had people tell me 1 to 0 is really boring. Obviously no appreciation for good pitching/ defense. Takes a while to learn all that I suppose.

Many did not realize how on edge you can be on every pitch until the playoffs. And the strategy on each pitch by both the pitcher and the hitter.
