Crane said the Astros payroll would be 50-60 million this year. That's a huge step up from last year at 26.1 million. They have spent 10 million on Feldman already, so signing Choo would max out their budget for this year. Wouldn't make any sense for them.

To recap from last night, I was told that all of choo's planned offers have been offered. There isn't a team that he is interested in that HASNT offered to this point. So he has everything he needs to sign. Heard last night Seattle and Cincy are out and him going to us is a done deal. The two mystery teams that my friend thinks could possibly come into play are ARZ and CHI cubs, no mention of houston anywhere. Said that he is pretty sure choo is coming here. There is simply no indication of any mystery teams to this point. My friend's been in the business for a while, and I'm sure there is a sneaking suspicion whenever there is that one team no one knows, but this time he doesnt think there is.

He said choo appears to be a very thoughtful person and expected to him to take his time in signing. He said he'd estimate sometime today but obviously you can never tell. I proposed the theory that maybe boras told him to wait a day or two to let all the info of our offer leak out for other teams to top. Maybe that's the case, maybe not. But I'm not even worried to this point. From what I've heard, I'm pretty confident at this point. The ONLY thing that scares me is how quiet JD is about this, because that could be a good or a bad thing. I'm not really worried though. Be patient. Whether he signs now or a week or a month, as long as its a rangers contract that's what matters

In other words, be patient. Its a big decision for him and his 3 kids. I wouldn't tell you information that would hamper the trust of my source unless I was confident in it!

lol no way in hell he lands with the astros. That would be incredibly stupid. They are 5 years away from competing, there is no point in shelling out 130 million dollars to a dude that wont even matter anymore when they are good. They're best bet is to sign popular names at short term deals just to fill the seats and get jersey sales

I totally agree with the first part of your scenario. But your last sentence sounds like what the Rangers did during the Eddie Childs years in Arlington. You might sell a few more beers and jerseys, but it's not a recipe for on the field success.

I just honestly don't think that anyone they sign will help. I think they could have gone out this offseason and got cano, mcCann, Choo, AND a top FA pitcher and they still wouldn't compete for a few years, so you might as well swallow your pride and take one or two more years of close to top picks before even being a player during the offseason

So signing Choo makes him our lead-off I would think. So does our batting order look like this:
1. Choo
2. Elvis
3. Beltre
4. Fielder
5. Rios
6. Moreland
7. Profar
8. Soto
9. Martin

Just by process of elimination there are so many teams that were thought to be in the hunt that dropped out by acquiring other players. And it also seems that the number of teams wanting to do 7 years is very small or not at all. So it really is in our favor. But after all this the last couple of days I am okay with it because if he wants 7 years and someone decides to give it to him then have at it. I also hope we don't let Choo tie us up from doing other things such as Cruz/Morales if that is to happen.

I still think we need another bat with some power.

Not even concerned about choo. I know its different for people who aren't in my position I guess, but I'm actually very confident

I think we need to add another power bat from the line-up I wrote up as well, but if Fielder really does refuse to DH often, as I've heard, then where does that player play bc our OF would be pretty full...unless that other player would DH...like maybe Adam Dunn?

I think it's been said that Fielder will bat 3rd.

Morales would DH without a problem.
