I assume the writers are going to connect them to just about everyone and the rangers staff will keep pretty tight lipped so nobody really knows what they're doing. I'm sure JD has plan A-L

He would still put pretty good numbers here.

:L you cannot possibly know that and have offered no quantifiable evidence to back that up. He's a novelty pitcher who had an unbelievable year. I very much doubt he can produce the same results again next year.

Looking at it, Dickey actually projects well, high GB rate to go with a solid K rate, solid FIP and xFIP numbers

HR rates are about middle of the road, better than Cole Hamels actually

That being said, I certainly wouldn't buy very high on him

Hes averaged just under a 3 ERA the last 3 years.. What more evidence do you need? Yeah his numbers will regress somewhat but not a lot.

I think you could expect a fair amount of regression for number of basic reasons:

1) NL to AL switch
2) Coming off a career season
3) Doing so in his age 37 season, though less worrisome because he's a knuckleballer, but...
4) He's a knuckleballer
5) Extreme pitcher's park to extreme hitter's park

RA Dickey is worth it but only if the price is right, and honestly Cy Young or not, he's not worth all that much compared to your typical pitcher due to his limitations

Ok a 3.30-3.50 ERA is what i would expect from him here, AL is not that much stronger than the NL then people think.

It makes a difference between facing an actual hitter and facing a pitcher 3-5 times a game

3.50 - 4.00, is about what I would expect

Yeah something like that but i doubt it would be in the 4s. Still Dickey would be a bargain given how much hes making even though hes old. But who knows to be honest.

Exactly with all the variables, he's a huge gamble, I'd be in but on the cheap

"difference between facing an actual hitter and facing a pitcher 3-5 times a game"

Have meant to research how much NL pitchers actually bat after the 6th.

My sense is that after the 6th the NL double switches often enough that pitchers may only get 3 ABs a game versus 4-5 ABs for position players. Granted those are 3 more or less free ABs for the pitcher ... but you can make a case that the normal AL catcher with 4-5 ABs is as much if more of a free ride for AL pitchers than NL pitchers are with the ABs they get.

R.A. Dickey might be a Colby-like fill in at #2-#3 who would strengthen the rotation and might get you as many wins as a Greinke for lots less outlay.

That was one of 5 variables that could push his numbers in the wrong direction mind you, but otherwise agree

Also keep in mind, even with the reduced stress due to being a knuckleballer, he still has no Ulnar collateral ligament, its been stated he's lucky he can turn a doorknob much less throw 80 MPH

And without it to stabilize it puts added stress on the entire elbow joint

5 million is not a huge gamble. If it is Soria is a huge gamble then.

It's not just the salary. It's what you'd have to trade to get him. He's not a FA. :L

Exactly. The Royals are rumored to have offered Lorenzo Cain and a prospect.

No idea what that would equal for the Rangers, but thats already more than what I would want to give up for him.

Apparently Hamilton met with the mariners today. I just don't see that happening.
